In December 1982, Arthur W. "Nick" Arundel spent 35 seconds bidding on 800 swampy acres near The Plains that had fallen into bankruptcy. The land for which he paid $2.1 million became Great Meadow, home to the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase and a range of outdoor community activities. Read story »
