This rural school isn’t located in any large city, but principal Nancy Chapin said it’s still big on technology.
Chapin said technology is seamlessly integrated into the school’s curriculum.
“We see that as an everyday part of student learning,” she said.
Lucketts Elementary, which has about 200 students, is located a few miles south of the Maryland state line. Students have a variety of clubs they can join, such as an after-school homework club or a poetry club.
The school piloted the Steps to Literacy program that has since spread to several elementary schools in the district. The program works to improve the reading skills of each student in kindergarten through second grade.
Chapin said the school works closely with each student.
“We just take a look at where the children are and adjust our program to meet their needs,” she said.
According to the school’s improvement plan, 91 percent of students passed all of their required SOL tests, which is above the 90 percent goal set by the school district.
The school’s improvement plan says that 33 percent of its students participated in mentoring programs in 2005-06, and school officials are trying to get the number closer to 40 percent.
She praised the PTA for its involvement in the school. She said parents helped to develop a program to assist those students who aren’t fluent in English.
The PTA also makes homemade ice cream -- hundreds of gallons of it -- as a school fundraiser during the Lucketts fair. The children also lend a hand, Chapin said.
She said her goals for the school include helping children to develop and enrich their skills.
“I hope that we continue to emphasize academic rigor and help our children be the very best they can be,” she said.
