A Lego club, chess club and knitting club are some of the after-school options available to students at Hillside Elementary.

Principal Mary Green said the school’s PTO has been instrumental in establishing such clubs for students.

She also praised the use of technology in the school, saying technology teachers work closely on a daily basis with teachers in the classroom.

“It’s an ordinary everyday part of the school,” she said of technology. “That’s just the way it is nowadays.”

The school doesn’t have an ESL program because the small number of students who speak English as a second language attend a nearby school for such instruction.

Hillside Elementary has some of the highest test scores in the county. About 98 percent of first-graders have a reading proficiency at or above their grade level, according to the school’s improvement plan.

About 99 percent of students passed all of their required SOL tests, surging past the district’s goal of 90 percent, the improvement plan states.

Hillside has several regular events that bring students and parents together, Green said. Every other year the school has a winter carnival, as well as an annual talent show as fundraisers.

The school also has pizza bingo night and family movie nights.

Green said she hopes the school will continue to build upon its already-strong base of parent support.
