Heritage High School in Leesburg, built in 2002, is one Loudoun’s newest high schools. With nearly 1,700 students, it is also one of the biggest high schools in the county.

Principal Margaret Huckaby said the school’s size allows Heritage to offer its students more robust technological facilities, sports and arts programs. Heritage students routinely work on research-based projects in one of the six computer labs scattered throughout the building.

Heritage students also can join any one of the six choirs or five bands, including marching band. Huckaby also pointed to the school’s strong visual arts program and the 40 extracurricular clubs open to all students.

Huckaby noted the central role community service plays at Heritage. Last year, students organized two school-wide fundraisers. In a walk-a-thon called “Walking for Water,” Heritage students and parents raised money for a drinking water well in the African nation of Burkina Faso.

The students also organized a fundraiser for the Nyumbani Orphanage, an AIDS orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya. These programs help build a sense of community in a very large school, Huckaby said, but she emphasized the sense of community it builds in each student.

“We’re very proud of our students’ willingness to do community service. We encourage that,” Huckaby said.
Of course, Heritage students are also teenagers, so one of their favorite projects throughout the school year is preparing for the all-night grad party.

Beyond community service and all of the extras, Huckaby said she and the Heritage faculty always focus on fostering high academic standards and achievement.

“We want to make sure the kids have the best education that they can have,” she said.
