Freedom High School in South Riding welcomed its first class of students to bright, shiny hallways in 2005, making it one of the newest high schools in Loudoun County.

In that short stretch of time, Freedom’s halls have filled rapidly and the rolls promise to continue expanding. Principal Christine Forester said there were 929 students last year and she expects to welcome roughly 1,180 in fall 2007.

Freedom’s student population is also diverse, reflecting the rapid growth of Loudoun County in the last decade. More than 45 percent of students are Asian, black or Hispanic. The expanding student population and diversity means that Freedom has a growing list of activities. The school already has established a varsity football team, which means it now fields varsity teams in all sports, Forester said.

Freedom also boasts a strong arts program, Forester said. The International Thespians Society includes nine seniors, the school’s chorus was named all-district and the band and orchestra competed at Busch Gardens this year.

Forester said the proof of a successful school lies in the success of its graduates. She said 91 percent of Freedom’s 152 graduating seniors were going on to post-secondary education and received more than $500,000 in scholarships.
