Principal Susan Mabee said students here learn skills needed to integrate technology into their academic studies.

The school has a computer lab and four instructional computers in each classroom. Like other Loudoun County schools, Dominion Trail has laptop computers that can be checked out for classroom use.

She said the school also has a rich music and arts program.

“Our specialists work collaboratively with classroom teachers to support the grade-level curriculum,” Mabee wrote in an e-mail.

The PTA also supports several after-school events, such as an annual dance, a talent show, bingo night and reading night. Each spring, the school has an SOL club to tutor students in advance of the standardized test.

Each year, fourth-grade students travel to Jamestown and the fifth-grade class takes a trip to learn about team-building.

“Our parents are active volunteers in all areas of our school,” Mabee wrote. “We also have, on staff, a parent liaison who serves as a resource to our parent community and staff.”

Test scores from Dominion Trail indicate that in 2005, third- and fifth-grade students scored lower than the district average in reading proficiency, but higher in math proficiency.

Dominion Trail students also scored higher than the district average on state science and social studies tests.

The school has two teachers and an assistant teacher to provide ESL support and resource services for students.

“Specialized and focused English classes provide skill development in listening, speaking, writing and culture,” Mabee wrote. “ESL students also share regular classroom instruction with their native English-speaking classmates.”

The younger students at the school, in kindergarten through second grade, participate in the district’s Steps to Literacy program. Mabee praised the school’s academic program.

“Our greatest accomplishments happen every day as students in our school engage in meaningful learning that will prepare them to successfully move on to middle and high school,” she wrote.
