Catoctin Elementary was built in 1966, so it has a long history as an educational institution in the Leesburg community. But with new faces filling the principal and assistant principal slots, Catoctin felt a little bit like a brand new school last year.

That new feeling was probably strongest for Rebecca B. Moyer, the principal who just finished her first year at Catoctin.

“Everyone has worked hard and worked smart and pulled together,” said Moyer. “We’ve had a great year.”
Moyer encourages her teachers to communicate and help each other maximize the educational opportunities for their students.

“Where it is appropriate we make connections [between classes], so students see learning across all the dimensions,” Moyer said.

Catoctin students also get a good grounding in technology, Moyer said. They visit the computer lab at least once a week and make regular use of the four computers in each classroom. Teachers and students routinely use PowerPoint to present materials and projects.

The school also provides a wide range of extracurricular activities, from a student-run morning show on the PA system to a robust PE program to a newly launched after-school chess club.

Moyer believes she and the school made a lot of progress in her first year as principal and she said she looks forward to taking more strides next year.

“I love it here,” Moyer said.
