Belmont Ridge Middle School principal Theresa Redd said she knows what makes the school special.

“I think our greatest accomplishment is our vision, or our belief, ‘excellence in education.’ The teachers and staff work to provide that,” she said.

Because there is no formal ESL program at Belmont Ridge, ESL students attend Harper Park Middle School. However, the Spanish-language teacher is certified in ESL and supervises an after-school ESL club.

The ESL club is just one of many after-school opportunities available for students. Teachers sponsor after-school activities, like the knitting club, science club, reading club, Odyssey of the Mind, and even a fitness club called “Girls on the Run.” There are activities on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. When the activity is finished, students are able to take a bus home.

The arts are an important part of the curriculum at Belmont Ridge. In addition to the regular art and music programs that align with the district curriculum, there is also a drama club that meets in the morning before school. Students act out one-act plays in conjunction with history lessons they learn.

Technology is stressed throughout the curriculum, Redd said. The school now has Smart Board multimedia projectors for every classroom in the school.
