Loudoun County Growth & Development

Backlash to Rapid Growth Extends to New Services and Infrastructure

Across the County, residents weary of the intense growth that has gripped their community over the past decade are fighting back - against schools, cellphone towers, a sheriff's substation and even a hospital. Read story and 2 comments »

Overview

Loudoun County's once-staggering growth rate has slowed, although the past decade ushered in tens of thousands of new faces. From 2000 to 2006, the population surged from 169,599 to 268,817, according to the U.S. Census Bureau — a jump of 59 percent.

Infrastructure has followed growth, but a personal vehicle is still the best way to connect with the rest of the Washington metropolitan area. That could change as the region's growth brings another option to the table.

Dulles International Airport and eastern Loudoun are scheduled to be served by the Metrorail system beginning in 2015. The new branch of the Metro eventually will extend 23 miles from Metrorail's orange line.

While Phase 1 of the extension will be 11 miles — from near the East Falls Church Metro station to Wiehle Avenue in Reston — the second phase will run from Wiehle through Herndon, Dulles airport and into Loudoun.

In Loudoun, the final stop on the Metro will be the Route 772 stop near the highway's intersection with the Dulles Greenway. The station will feature a Kiss and Ride, as well as parking for about 3,300 vehicles.

Metro stations along the new corridor will have trains stopping every seven minutes during peak hours, with less frequent trains at non-peak times. The project will bring 11 new Metro stations to Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

Another option is Loudoun County Transit, which offers bus service from park-and-ride lots to destinations in Virginia and Washington.
