Dominion senior midfielder Zack Glascock thrust his stick in the air and pumped his fist. With 1:18 remaining in the Titans' Dulles District tournament final matchup with top-seeded Broad Run at George Mason High School, his sixth goal of the night gave Dominion a 16-15 lead and looked like the possible game-winner.
After an agonizing 11-10 loss to the reigning tournament champion Spartans during the regular season, the Titans were eager to wash away the memories of their lone district loss with a tournament trophy.
But Broad Run wasn't done just yet.
Just 25 seconds after Glascock's tally, Broad Run junior attacker Andy Londos curled around the back of the Dominion net untouched and put home his fourth goal of the night on a wrap-around that beat Titans' sophomore goalie Andrew Fawkes to even the game at 16-16.
And following an unforced turnover by the Titans on their own end, it was Londos again who rushed to the front of the goal in the waning seconds. Sophomore attacker Ryan Madigan bolted through midfield and hit Londos in front of the net for the winning goal with 6.6 seconds left on the clock. Moments later, the Spartans were celebrating their second straight district tournament championship and the Titans were wondering what could've been.

"I knew I just had to go to the goal," Londos said. "We only needed one to tie it up, so all I was thinking was, 'Let's get one right here,' We could've taken it into overtime if we needed to, but the way they were playing, we didn't want to take that chance. I just knew we needed to get the ball in the net."
With an aggressive attack in the early going, the Titans (11-6) took a 5-3 lead into the second period behind two goals and complete dominance of the face-off circle from Glascock. Dominion's zone defense, although shaky at times, did well to contain the Spartans' top scoring threats and forced them to take shots from the outside. Meanwhile, the Titans had players camped in front of the Broad Run net all night. The vast majority of their goals were scored within five feet of Spartans' senior net-minder Kenny McAdow.
Broad Run (13-3) tied things up at 5-5 midway through the second period, but Dominion responded with three straight goals, including perhaps the goal of the year in the district from Glascock. With the seconds winding down at the end of the half, the first team All-Dulles District selection sprinted 60 yards straight down the heart of the field and unleashed a wicked shot from 15 yards out that bounced off the field turf and past McAdow just as time expired. The Titans took an 8-5 advantage into the intermission.
The Spartans regrouped and came out firing in the second half. After a sloppy substitution from the Titans led to a delay of game penalty, District Player of the Year Tim Sanders immediately made Dominion pay with a goal on a nifty pass from Londos to cut the lead to 9-7. Moments later, the Spartans narrowly avoided a whistle for too many men on the field and by the 3:31 mark in the third, they'd score three more goals to claim their first lead of the game at 10-9. Heading into the fourth, the Spartans held a 12-10 advantage.
But Broad Run made several costly mistakes to start the final frame, taking a penalty in the opening minute which led to a two-man advantage following a late hit call on Nick Khouri to end the third. The Titans capitalized instantly with an unassisted goal from senior Andrew Salamone. And before the second penalty was over, sophomore Kyle Hall evened the score at 12-12 with his second goal of the night. Sean Cooper's tally 50 seconds later gave the Titans the lead back but Kyle Ward's fourth goal of the night tied it back up. In all, there were nine ties in the game.
"We knew we just needed to get the ball into their end," Londos said. "We were taking all kinds of stupid penalties – myself included – and we just had to get possession and turn that into good scoring chances."
Hall and Glascock scored one minute apart for the Titans, the latter coming during another penalty to the Spartans but senior Austin Freeman and Madigan scored consecutive goals to tie the game up again at 15-15, setting up Glascock's final strike. And although Dominion dominated the face-offs all night, it was Spartan senior Will Field who dug out the final draw to propel Broad Run to the game-tying goal moments later.
Glascock led all scorers with six goals and one assist, Hall finished with three goals and senior Michael Fawkes and sophomore Stephen Tarrant combined for seven assists on the night. Andrew Fawkes had 11 saves for the Titans who travel to Salem for their Region II semifinal matchup on Monday. Dominion would like to see the Spartans once more at Broad Run in the tournament final on Wednesday, Glascock said.
"It's hard to come out here and lose by one goal when you're up the whole game, but we played hard tonight and we've got to get ready for regionals," he said. "We need to go down to Salem and put them away and then hopefully we get to see Broad Run again."
Londos had five goals and one assist and Sanders tallied three goals and an assist as the Spartans won their 10th straight game and their second straight by a single goal – they beat Briar Woods 12-11 in their semifinal on Wednesday. Madigan had two goals and three assists, Ward finished with four goals and McAdow equaled his counterpart with 11 saves for Broad Run. They'll host Western Albermarle in the other semifinal on Monday.
"Maybe we're bringing out the best in everybody," Broad Run Coach Dave Forman said. "It's a healthy thing to have our game tested and that puts us ahead of where we'd be if these were lopsided games. I think the guys have a deep reservoir of heart and talent and they now know that they can always rely on that on the field when we're in a tight game like tonight."
