In a matter of hours, the Freedom and Loudoun County girls' basketball teams made history on Saturday at Siegel Center in Richmond.
The Eagles' 58-33 victory over Robert E. Lee in the Virginia AA Division 3 championship game and the Raiders' 63-47 win over Turner Ashby in the AA Division 4 title game not only marked the first state basketball titles for each school, but it also marked the first state basketball titles in the county as a whole.
Freedom (28-2) got things rolling Saturday morning with an 18-0 run that opened up a 22-4 lead and the Eagles never looked back. Junior center Kelsey Buchanan had 11 points, 21 rebounds and a state-tournament record 10 blocks. Junior forward Dionna Scott had a game-high 24 points.
Loudoun County (25-5) also got rolling early, leading the Knights, 15-4, after one quarter and 36-18 at halftime. The Raiders also avenged a 69-57 loss to Turner Ashby in their second game of the season. Loudoun County ran the table impressively in the state tournament, winning by an average of 29 points.
