As the Freedom Eagles and Loudoun County Raiders gear up for their respective AA Virginia state championship games on Saturday, we take a quick look back at this year's memorable girls' basketball season.
It began with the two teams that remain standing, as they met in a preseason tournament with the Eagles routing their rivals to take the first step toward establishing themselves as the best team in the Dulles District and ended in similar fashion. In the fourth meeting between the two teams Freedom held off a much improved Raiders' squad to complete the season sweep, cap a perfect run through the district and clinch the school's first ever Dulles District regular season and tournament titles.
In between those two bookends, the season saw plenty of drama with upsets in district play and a fierce battle between Broad Run, Briar Woods and Park View for third place in the league behind the two decided front-runners. Eventually the Spartans won that battle, and they were rewarded with a home game in the Region II tournament.

In the Cedar Run District, Loudoun Valley finished strong to claim the third seed in their league tournament but fell in the semifinals to end their season.
With impressive runs through the Region II Division 3 and Division 4 tournaments, the Eagles and Raiders both earned spots in the state tournament as top seeds. Neither disappointed with the Eagles squeaking past James Monroe and coming from behind to beat a talented Millbrook team while the Raiders have run all over their opposition, cruising to Saturday's final.
