Crime Blotter: Assault on Law Enforcement

Authorities are investigating a case of assault on law enforcement in Sterling and an auto theft case in Chantilly, according to a daily report by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Auto Crash/DUI: Around 5 p.m. Sunday, Charles H. Popenoe, 76, of Bethesda, MD, was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius at the corner of Route 7 and Goose Creek in Ashburn when he made a U-turn and struck a 2002 Mercedes driven by Ngan Duong, 43, of Ashburn. Popenoe was airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital, where he was later charged with a DUI.

Auto Crash/DUI: Around 9:15 p.m. Sunday, Leslee Garza, 20, of Harpers Ferry, WV, was driving a 1990 Toyota Corolla on Route 9, west of the Hillsboro town limits when her vehicle crossed the double-yellow line and struck a 2007 Jeep Liberty driven by Lance Benedict, 43, of McLean, VA. Gaza, who was not wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries. Benedict and one other passenger were taken to INOVA Loudoun Hospital-Leesburg for their injuries. Garza was charged with a DUI.

Auto Theft: Between 2:30 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. Monday, someone removed a 2007 Jeep Cherokee from the 25500 block of Quits Pond Court in Chantilly. Keys to the vehicle were left in another car parked in the driveway. Missing from the car were the keys, a GPS and an MP3 player.

Larceny: Between 4 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, someone entered five work vehicles in the 45900 block of Maries Road in Sterling belonging to Nugent & Sons. The locks were broken on the vehicles to gain entry and various items were taken.

Burglary: Around 7 a.m. Monday, someone entered an attached garage of a home in the 21200 block of Dubois Court in Ashburn. Inside, they entered a vehicle and removed an MP3 players and a small amount of cash. Also, alcohol was removed from inside the garage.

Larceny: Between 12:01 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday, someone entered a vehicle in the 25500 block of Quits Pond Court in Chantilly and removed a GPS unit from an unlocked vehicle.

Gang Graffiti: Around 3:30 p.m. Monday, possible gang graffiti was located on a bridge near Algonkian Parkway and Sugarland Run in Sterling. The report was forwarded to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Gang Intelligence Unit.

Burglary: Between 4:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday, someone entered a residence in the 20 block of Cedar Drive in Sterling and removed a wallet. A garage door opener left in an unlocked vehicle was possibly used to gain entry into the house.

Auto Accident: On Monday, deputies responded to a single vehicle crash in the 17650 block of Dry Mill Road in Leesburg where a 17-year-old girl left the roadway and struck a fence. She was airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital where she was scheduled to be released last evening. She was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.

Assault on Law Enforcement: Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the corner of Old Ox Road and Rock Hill Road in Sterling. During the stop, the driver, Kareen A. Watson, 33, of Herndon, became belligerent and began fighting the deputy. The man was arrested after a brief struggle. It was learned that Watson was wanted by the U.S. Marshals for a probation violation. He was charged locally with obstruction of justice and assault on law enforcement. He remains held at the Loudoun Adult Detention Center.
