In a new effort to thwart crime, Loudoun County sheriff's officials plan to install a surveillance video camera at an undisclosed location in Sterling.

The Web-based surveillance system consists of a high-resolution video camera with the ability to pan, tilt and zoom. The 160mm zoom lens can read a vehicle license plate 100 yards away.

The system will be installed by the end of the month, said Loudoun sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell.

The surveillance program will run for a 90-day trial period. The sheriff's office will assess "the quality of information" that can be obtained from the camera, Troxell said. The camera will be recording at all times, the sheriff's office said.

Loudoun officials said the camera is an innovative way to boost police oversight as budget cutbacks have prevented the county from hiring more sheriff's deputies.

"The hope here is to extend the ability of the sheriff's office to monitor really problematic areas where we can't afford to have cops out there all the time," Supervisor Andrea McGimsey (D-Potomac) said.

The sheriff's office has a dedicated computer that will download and file video footage from the camera. The agency owns the camera and plans to use funds from its current budget to install it.

Sterling was chosen as the location for the video camera because of its crime history. Between June 30, 2008, and July 1 of this year, 54.8 percent of crimes in the county occurred in eastern Loudoun, according to data from the sheriff's office.

"There tends to be a higher number of police incidents in the Sterling area as compared to the rest of the county," Troxell said.

The idea for the surveillance system came from the public. The Potomac-Sterling Community Outreach Committee recommended the system during its meetings last year.

The Sterling community was in an uproar last year after it experienced a wave of violence that included separate shootings and a stabbing during a short period of time.

"Public safety is one of the biggest concerns in Sterling right now," McGimsey said. "We're testing out [the surveillance system] to see if it helps. Hopefully, we'll be able to get some information on any crimes that are being committed in that area."

Nobody seems to care that our rights are being eroded little by little.

really? If your not doing anything wrong...why are you worried about it? With the waves of crime that have occured in Sterling the last year it seems our rights have already been taken away by criminals...our basic rights of walking in the morning have been taken away. Have you forgot the Bennett's. They should install these camera's eventually in Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg, Sugarland. Maybe if these criminals know they are being watched and Loudoun County is serious about crime, they will move on......

It's no wonder that Sterling / Eastern Loudoun has the highest crime rate in the county - - this is where most of the illegal alien invaders are hiding in plain sight. Thanks (NOT), obummer and Nappytano for not enforcing our immigration laws.

How wonderful. Place the cameras at Sterling Plaza and put the police station at the other end of Sterling in a residential neighborhood between a school and a playground. Brilliant !! BTY purplehayes ... Maybe they ought to put cameras in Lowe's Island and Landsdowne. That seems to be where the murders are. Bet they'd love that in those neighborhoods.

I know ... my bad. I tried to correct a few errors and found out too late that I couldn't. Then, I made it worse by trying to get the POST to remove the dupes ... to no avail. It'll pass ... you can unpucker now.
