Virginia gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds, who has spent much of his time since the June 9 Democratic primary raising money, announced yesterday that he collected $3.4 million during the month-long fundraising period that ended June 30.

That is more than Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) and Sen. Mark R. Warner (D) accumulated in a similar period during their gubernatorial races, according to the announcement. The announcement also said 63 percent of the nearly $5 million Deeds, a state senator from Bath County, has raised this year came from within Virginia.

GOP nominee Robert F. McDonnell’s spokeswoman, Crystal Cameron, said the former attorney general’s campaign would release campaign finance numbers today. She also took a swipe at Deeds for accepting support from unions.

“Creigh promised the unions that he would be a good partner, and it looks like his partners are paying him well,” she said.
