Yesterday afternoon’s small kitchen fire sent a Loudoun County resident to INOVA Lansdowne hospital with smoke inhalation.

The occupant attempted to contain an oven fire with a household fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful as the fire spread to adjacent cabinets and walls. As a result of attempting to extinguish the fire, and with smoke conditions worsening, the resident sustained smoke inhalation.

The Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 report at 5:41 p.m. for an apartment kitchen fire at 19580 Miramonte Terrace in Ashburn.

First arriving emergency personnel quickly extinguished the fire and performed salvage and overhaul of the residence. Fire-Rescue crews on scene were from the Ashburn, Moorefield, Leesburg, and Sterling fire stations.

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled the fire accidental in nature after cooking materials inside the oven caught fire, eventually spreading through the kitchen area.

The damage estimate has been placed at $3,000 and the residence has been displaced as a result of the fire and smoke.

There were no additional injuries to civilians or emergency personnel.
