More Illegal Immigrants Turned In

U.S.-Trained Unit In Sheriff's Office

The number of illegal immigrants turned over to federal authorities by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office went up sharply last year with the addition of a small team of federally trained sheriff's deputies, according to figures released this week.

The sheriff's office transferred 135 such cases to Immigration and Customs Enforcement last year, compared with 83 cases in 2007, an increase of 63 percent, sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

In the summer, three sheriff's investigators in the gang intelligence unit completed training under the federal 287(g) program, which gives local law enforcement officers access to a federal database to check the residency status of criminal suspects they arrest. Other Loudoun sheriff's deputies, as in the past, have called ICE when they think a suspect might be in the country illegally so that ICE can run the status check, Troxell said.

Of the 135 people turned over to ICE last year, about 30 were the result of investigations by the three trained deputies, he said.

"With the 287(g) program, it enables us to skip a step and get the ball rolling ourselves," Troxell said.

Loudoun is one of several localities in the region that participates in the program. Others include Prince William County and Manassas. But unlike Prince William authorities, who check the residency status of every person arrested, the Loudoun Sheriff's Office runs checks that are more selective.

Of the people they come in contact with during criminal investigations, Loudoun sheriff's deputies will check the residency status of those who provide "reason to believe" they are in the country illegally, Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson said. Such indications could include providing false identification, giving a false name or not having a driver's license when pulled over for a traffic infraction, Troxell said, adding that a person does not have to be arrested for a check to be performed.

In a recent incident, a man was identified as an illegal resident after being pulled over for speeding in Sterling on Feb. 11, Troxell said. He could not produce a driver's license, instead handing over a passport that said he was from El Salvador. Further investigation showed that he was wanted by ICE on an unrelated matter, and he is being held locally on an ICE detainer, Troxell said.

Kent Willis, executive director of ACLU of Virginia, which has raised concerns over Loudoun's program in the past, said policies that call for selective checks of suspects' residency status are "recipes for profiling."

"It's that very process of selectivity that creates all kinds of problems," Willis said.

He said that local authorities using that approach might be more inclined to check the residency status of a person of color, or of someone who doesn't speak English. Willis said he opposes local enforcement of immigration policy, viewing it as a federal responsibility, but prefers Prince William's universal checks to Loudoun's system.

Simpson said he would like to be able to check the residency status of everyone who passes through the Adult Detention Center. But that is not feasible right now because the jail staff in Loudoun is not certified under the 287(g) program, he said.

He defended his agency's approach, saying the sheriff's office hasn't received any complaints of racial profiling, and added that everyone in the department undergoes "cultural diversity training."

Simpson said the federal training of the three sheriff's investigators has paid dividends.

"I do think it has been a useful tool," Simpson said.

When illegal residents are identified by the Loudoun sheriff's office, they first serve out time on whatever local charge they were arrested for. They are then transferred to federal authorities, who ultimately determine whether to deport them.

Before agreeing to participate in the federal program, Simpson had raised concerns that the county's jail would become overcrowded as inmates awaited transfer to federal facilities. But Simpson said that crowding has not been an issue, and that inmates with ICE detainers have been picked up by federal authorities within days of serving their local time.

The ACLU sucks! They do not give a damn about Americans and how illgeal immigration has severely affected them. OF COURSE when looking for illgal immigrants your attention is going to be automatically drawn to someone who can't even speak English. These are criminals, they are in jail for committing a crime and nobody needs to defend them because they are asked to *gasp* prove their identity. We are all asked to prove our identity every day. Their opinion is moot anyway. The Federal government has given the local authorities who have 287G training the power to check the status, so whats the problem.

Speaking of proving identity, when I renewed my VA driver's license for the umpteenth time (well, it seems that way), I had to go home and get my birth certificate. I have always been a US resident, have been a VA resident for more than 40 years, and have had a VA license continuously for 20+ years.

How can anyone take the ACLU seriously anymore? If newspapers refused to run their idiotic comments, the ACLU would shrivel up like the rotten tomato they are. Why does any newspaper report on them? While you're at it, why not get the thoughts of the crazy homeless drunk guy on the corner and print them?
Kent Willis needs to remove his head from his rectum. It's the process of selectivity that PREVENTS all sorts of problems!

This is not just a federal responsibility. Enforcing the laws against illegal aliens is EVERYONE'S job.

I'm tired of everyone being so lazy. This your country, take some pride and defend it. Send illegal aliens home. Support legal immigration.

seems to ME the smart move is letting these guys get picked up, taken to t ajob site, allowed to begin working, then the foreman on the job is approached and made to account for the citizenship of the workers. when they CAN'T- the job is stopped, the company FINED, and hopefully a lesson is learned that stops the COMPANIES from hiring illegals! why pick off the little fish when there are HUGE ones being left unhooked?!?

If not speaking English and providing a Salvadorean passport instead of a driver's license isn't reasonable suspicion, then I don't know what is.

The 287(g) program is the best programs in place today. It should be in every county and city. FAIRFAX!!!!

The other program that should be mandated is E-Verify. This is a free website that employers can use to check whether workers are legal or not. It is easy to use and FREE. But...our Congress keeps trying to kill the program.

Call your Senators and Congressman and ask them to mandate use of E-Verify. This wil reduce the jobs magnet that brings many illegals to the US.

Go Loudon County!!!!!!!!!!Americans are sick and tired of seeing illegal day laborers hanging all over the streets. Get rid of them. DEPORT, DEPORT, DEPORT. As of this morning the WP is reporting that 5 million americans are collecting unemployment, while these illegals are hanging around here looking for work. They need to be removed, ASAP.

"...5 million americans are collecting unemployment, while these illegals are hanging around here looking for work."

So if there is so much work for "illegal day laborers", why are there 5 million lazy Americans sitting around on their tails collecting unemployment (i.e., being paid by your tax dollars and mine for doing nothing) and being a burden on the economy???

Enforce immigration laws, yes, but don't attack people (legal or illegal) because they are trying to make a few dollars through hard work and honest labor to put food on the table for themselves and their families.

--------------------------------------

Because the illegals work tax-free and for less than minimum wage. Legal immigrants have taxes taken from their wages and work for at least minimum wage. There is nothing wrong with legal immmigrants, as they don't depress wages in the same way that illegal immigrants do.

These so-called "Jobs Americans won't do" is BS. They are all jobs that Americans used to do, when the wages for them were competitive. Stop the illegal immigrants from doing them, the wages for those jobs go back up, and Americans will perform them again.

Use a little common sense.

Are you kidding????
You are begrudging Americans their unemployment benefits because they lost their jobs?? That is what those funds are there for, it is paid through unemployment insurace.

How can you be FOR enforcing immigration laws but AGAINST people being angry because illegals are working in the US illegally ???? Doesn't make much sense.

Why are Americans not doing the jobs?? Lets see, illegals crowd into one home and have several adults under one roof working under the table tax free. Their anchor babies (and they have several) are entitled to WIC, Food Stamps, Welfare, Free Healthcare and free education. So they are able to make a go of it taking jobs for low wages and no insurance. BUT Americans are obviously unreasonable and expect to work on the books, paying taxes and reciving a livable wage and benefits AND they actually want to live one family per household instead of one family per bedroom...Damn them!

Honest labor is not applicable to illegals, they are not being honest when they are working illegally. Enough said.

Explain how you have determined that asking criminals to prove their identiy before they are released back into the streets is racist. If you are a criminal illegal alien or even a non-criminal illegal alien you SHOULD be afraid just like anyone who is breaking the law. But I do agree with one statement you made...illegals should leave Virginia at once!

Well that statment only reflect on who YOU are as a person not ALL Americans. You see, I worked in the potato fields while in high school. I worked fast food and cleaning toilets in a hotel when I first got out of High School and I worked in many restaraunts both when I was younger and to supplement my income during tight times. My husband hauled mud for a stone mason company, did landscaping and construction. These are now low wage jobs because the illegals will take low wages, work under the table and do not require insurance...THEY drove the wages down. Do you think that the builders that made millions upon millions in this area can't afford to pay a decent wage to a legal immigrant or an American? Do you think that the hotels that charge over $140 and up per room and are often filled to capacity can't afford to pay a decent wage for its employees? If Harry Homeowner can't afford to pay someone a decent wage to cut his grass, clean his toilet and raise his kids then he can damn well do all of that himself like most of us do.

Americans need these jobs yet Congressman Gutierrez wants to make sure illegal workers can continue taking American jobs. Whose interest is he representing anyway?”

Obama and Gutierrez actually answered him with two new spending plans - one hiring another 500000 illegal aliens and the other allowing 2.5 more million guest workers into the nation. Who is representing Americans?

Bravo, LoCo, for being a part of 287(g)! I'm always happy to hear that more illegals are being turned over to ICE! This is a start in the right direction. Now if we can rid Sterling Park of every flophouse, that would be even better! I suspect that illegals are starting to leave. Some business that catered to them have folded. When I saw that Pepe's went out of business, I cheered---it was good to see that MS-13 hangout go away. This past week, I noticed that Danielly's Boutique is now closed. Hopefully word is getting out that LoCo is no longer a sanctuary jurisdiction.

I Agree two4three2, Pepes was just one complaint away from losing their business license so they moved south (North or South Carolina I believe), Hopefully a decent business will move in that location. I hadn't noticed that the Boutique had closed, glad to hear it though!

Yes, many of them are moving out of Sterling Park. Hopefully these homes will be fixed up and sold to legal residents for single family living. There are still some homes that are on my list to be reported to zoning, something I do regularly.

This is a step in the right direction. Our immigration laws must be enforced. I am not against immigrants at all, every single one of us (except Native Americans) are decendents of immigrants. It is illegal immigration that has created a huge problem for us and it must be brought under control. America is going through a very tough time and the rest of the world can not expect us to bail them out, too, all the while hating and reviling us and our leaders.

Here in the land of the Tar-heel, we are having our own heating up of the undocumented worker, a.k.a., the illegal immigrant.

We have our resident supporters of 287 (g), and our citizens who are concerned with the degradation of civil rights that enforcement of 287 (g) may cause.

We have in the neighboring county, the home of the state capitol, Raleigh and Wake County
an organization, ALIPAC (Americans for Legal Immigration PAC) whose president, William Gheen has been visiting our county seat, Pittsboro of Chatham County, for the purpose of agitating the country to a MOA (memorandum of agreement) on 287 (g).

Last Monday, February 16, 2009 the BOC (Board of Commissioners) held a publicly advertised meeting, with an announced 30 minute period for public input. The announced 30 minutes extended into two hours and the vast majority, limited to 3 minutes each, were fully in support of the county NOT agreeing to 287 (g). The BOC agreed not to revisit their rejection of 287 (g) inspite of William Gheen's "powerful" organization, ALIPAC.

William has threaten to bring his troops into the county but to date nothing has happened. Apropos, one citizen a tower of power in this county, quoting; "As we say down here....this is where we separate the man from the boys or if you can't run with the big dogs stay UNDER the porch". We have not seen or heard from William these many days.

William did go into a tyraid on the local Bulletin Board calling said author of the BIG DOG homily, and I quote, "Of course you do not like my "aura" witch. You practice in the black arts of witchcraft and celebrate that false feminist religion of Wicca. So while I pray to God for guidance and protection you can burn some stuff on an alter, summon the four corners, and dance shrieking beneath the moonlight for all I care. Couldn't we find a satanist, a warlock, or a voodoo priestess to speak out on these issues in Chatham County instead? LolSorry I am such an outsider folks, I'm just a Christian that loves my country as one nation under God. If I learn how to conjure spirits and speak with the dead will I fit in more with the current spokespeople like mamacash in Chatham County?"

Golly, what century have I found myself in.
Oh, lordy, take me back to the 21st century.

Freakladeeboo, you call us idiots???

1.) There is a HUGE difference between Immigrants and Illegal aliens. Nobody here has a problem with legal immigration.
2.) If you ARE an illegal or married to an illegal then YOU shut the He11 up...you are a criminal and should have no right to an opinion.
3.) Guess what...there are Americans and legal immigrants that are struggling to put a roof over their families heads and food on the table. There are senior citizens that are trying to decide whether to pay for meds or food. There are citizens in need of medical treatment that can't afford it. I will worry about them first...Let the people in these other countries take care of their own. As long as we wipe the A$$'s of these other countries they will continue to ship their poor to us to deal with.
4.) If you are an illegal or your illegal spouse is paying income taxes then you are committing fraud. The only way that you can work on the books as an illegal is to use someones elses identity. If you or your illegal alien spouse is working under the table then you are not paying into income tax so you are not entitled to a return you stupid fool.
5.) As far as them living multiples in one home, there are many issues with that. It affects ME directly so I have a right to have issues with it. They have brought the value of MY property down...no normal citizen will buy my house when they see a flophouse next door, they block MY streets with multiple vehicles that they shouldn't even be able to drive and with work vehicles...sometimes I wonder how an emergency vehicle could even get to my house...they split up single family homes into multiple homes with multiple entries causing a safety issue for firefighters to find the right entry, some have even been seen urinating in yards because there are only two bathrooms for 17 men.
5.)Being that you are an admitted illegal or the spouse of one and based on the stupidity of your post, I can only laugh at your comment about foreigners (illgals) being way smarter. Yes we ARE embarassed that you and your illegal alien buddies work our system...we are embarassed that OUR LEADERS have allowed you scum-sucking parasites to invade our country, take our jobs, use up our resources, rape our healthcare and education system, bring down our quaility of life then turn around and spit in our faces like you have done here in this discussion.

You are truly a piece of work and a fine example of one of the reasons why we want the likes of you outta here.

I already have one...my husband. Actually I do a lot of it myself; it is great exercise! and I am sure it is going to be done the way I want it done. I think the majority of middle-class Americans do the work themselves. Whenever I hire a contractor to do anything I do my best to hire someone I know and am sure is a legal worker and when I don't know the company, I let them know that I want English speaking workers that can communicate with me show some sort of ID...I was actually hung up on when making that request once.

You know, I get it. I really do. It is a fact that illegal immigration causes a strain on many public services. It's also true that some whom are here illegally commit crimes and they should be dealt with swiftly and surely. But what disturbs me more than anything is the tone of many of the comments here and those I overhear on this subject.

If these people were native english speaking europeans we wouldn't have half the venom in our tones. Statistically illegals do not take jobs that any of you want anyway and they commit a FRACTION of the violent crime that happens in our county.

Times are hard and getting harder for many and I guess it's satisfying to be able to point the finger of blame and say, "it's their fault". The problem is it's too easy and their is always someone else to blame. If we could magically deport all the illegals who would be next on the list for blame? Legal immigrants who speak funny? Non-christians? I stand confident that it would be someone of some ilk different from those who simply cannot look in the mirror and control themselves before they try to control everyone else.

I want to commend Loudoun County on what I see as a VERY EVEN-HANDED policy and implementation of policy when dealing with this very complex issue. You should be congratulated and I hope you can keep up the good work and common sense approach.

Afghanvet (gotta wonder about that handle) - it appears that you really DON'T get it. The issue is not that some folks 'speak funny'. It is that fact that the minute the illegals crossed ILLEGALLY into the USA they committed a crime and therefore all illegal alien invaders are, by definition, criminals. And every minute they remain, stealing identities and jobs, they compound their criminality.

But since you bring up the issue of language, why is it that JC Penney's has its signs only in English and Spanish (same sized print)? Where are the signs in Swahili? German? Vietnamese? Farsi?

Why is it that the printing on product labels is so tiny because they are bilingual? And why bilingual only in spanish?

Why are some Americans denied promotions because they don't speak spanish?

Hope you are preparing for the demise of the USA and the loss of its sovereignty to the North American Union. It is probably not a coincidence that the dollar's value has plummeted - a great 'reason' to substitute is the the 'amero', a common currency for Canada, the USA (or what used to be the USA), and mexico (no caps b/c no respect - just contempt).

It has never occured to anyone of you that maybe the economy is going to the crapper because suddenly ICE decided to remove thousands of people that were spending their money here. It's stupid to think that removing that many people wouldn't cause a crisis like the one we are going through. Not to mention the housing market the illegals are being blamed for that too, well you know if they have been deported it's a bit hard to make a house payment from their.

QSO8686---Are you out of your freaking mind? Illegals were spending their money here? Have you been living under a rock all this time? No---a good chunk of their money is sent back to their native country---not put into local coffers. If anything, illegals are a drain on society. Did you know that in LoCo a house has to be assessed at $1 million to have the property taxes on it pay for one child's education? Illegals cramming into flophouses are in no way paying their fair share of taxes. Many of them are being paid under the table---so again, not paying taxes. Many are using stolen SSNs to work. Who do you think gets the tax bill for that---the rightful owner of the SSN! If anything illegals are in large part for the economy being in the toilet. How many of them were given subprime no doc loans by sleazy predatory lenders? A large part of the foreclosure problem is due to this! These illegals are parasites taking from American citizens and legal immigrants. Your post is truly idiotic! Do some research before you run your mouth.

Are you serious? The illegal immigration problem has been going on a lot longer than the current economic crises and so have the raids, busts and deportations.

And like two4three2 said, they spend very little of their money here. They tend to live in large groups and live very cheaply then send as much back to their homeland as possible. Take a look at the lines at Western Union on a Friday...Mexico received about $24 billion last year in remittances from Mexicans working in the US. Do you think they used that huge boost in their economy to better that country???No, the rich got richer and the poor got exported to the US to make more money to send back to Mexico.

If any of those that were deported had mortgages then they were illegal and had no business buying a home and creating debt in this country. The banks that gave out these loans are to blame for that. But it is the taxpayers that have to pay for the large bailout awarded to the banks for thier stupid decisions. It is also the taxpayers that have to pay higher medical costs and taxes to cover the costs of providing healthcare and education for illegals and their children. Taxpayers in border states are facing hospitals closing due to the stress caused by illegals.

JustMeSterling,
dfhaines said: By not using companies that hire illegals, we're doing our part. We don't need no stickin gov't, billion dollar fences or ICE agents running a muck.

Thanks :-)

I agree, I wish more people would stand up to businesses who do illegal hiring.

Deporting illegals makes more jobs available for legal citizens and reduces identity theft. It also sends a valuable signal to our many hard-working Hispanic citizens that says: you aren't chumps for following the law and becoming citizens the right way, the legal way. Welcome to the USA. We are stronger for having you here the right way, the legal way.

QSO8686----I hope you have an illegal flop house move in next door to you, then you will get a real taste of how the illegals live, with no respect at all for their neighbors, what was once a lawn, will be turned into a parking lot, every month someone will move out and new ones will move in. Backyard Corona parties all summer long with the music blasting, and if you have daughters, don't let them outside. And let's not forget the never ending garbage all over the place that so much helps the envirement.

I hope the stimulus money that goes to the states carries the stipulation that all the workers must be Americans. It would be awful if the highway and bridge projects hired illegals. Put Americans to work and send the illegals packing.

Sorry, ArtMuse - but the Dumocrats took out the provision that mandated that anyone receiving taxpayer stimulus money had to check with E-Verify to confirm that the workers they were hiring are legally entitled to work here. Both Webb and Warner (voting the Dumocrat party line) voted to nullify E-Verify and to delete the mandate. All the illegal alien invaders will be 'packing' are their weapons.

segeny----I work for the state of virginia, and e-verify is in place. Especially in state agencies, right now it is up to the employer to use it, soon it will be mandated.
