County Supervisors Oppose Power Line Project

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has joined the fight against plans for a high-voltage power line that would go through a 10.5-mile stretch of the Lovettsville area and parts of West Virginia and Maryland.

The board unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday opposing the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline, known as PATH.

The 765,000-volt line is a joint venture of Pennsylvania-based Allegheny Energy and Ohio-based American Electric Power.

In their opposition to the project, supervisors joined Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.), the Leesburg Town Council and a group of Lovettesville area residents who have expressed concerns about the need for the power line and its impact on property values.

The line would not serve Lovettsville homes and businesses directly, but utility officials have said it would feed into the overall electrical grid and could help prevent blackouts there.

Officials have not determined the line's final route but plan to file an application with the Virginia State Corporation Commission next month and have the line built by 2013.

March 2 Is Deadline For Business Licenses

Loudoun County business owners and self-employed people have until March 2 to renew their business licenses by reporting their 2008 gross receipts and making payment to the revenue commissioner.

Revenue Commissioner Robert S. Wertz Jr. recently mailed more than 18,000 notices, county officials said Tuesday.

Wertz encourages business owners to renew their licenses at www.loudoun.gov/bpol-file. Business owners who do not wish to renew online may return completed forms and payment by regular mail.
