Enjoy the warm weekend weather at the 84th Annual Virginia Gold Cup Races in Great Meadow, or a family-centered fair at the Philomont General Store. In Leesburg, participate in a wine tasting twist with Tarara Winery Saturday afternoon.

84th Virginia Gold Cup Races

The 84th annual Gold Cup Races – one of the largest steeplechase races in the country – will commence Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Great Meadow. The races are held on the first Saturday in May every year, the same day as the Kentucky Derby, and feature timber horse races, contests, hurdles and Jack Russell Terrier races.

Over 30 vendor booths will also be present for the event, located at 5089 Old Tavern Road in The Plains. General admission car passes are $85, with up to six occupants.

Philomont Garden Phair

Visit the historic Philomont General Store Saturday and Sunday, where numerous May Day Baskets – created by members of Loudoun County – will be on display. Families can also participate in tours of the town's local gardens, and purchase plants and garden accessories from a handful of vendors.

Throughout the phair, the store will sell sandwiches, and ice cream, as well as local wines and a selection of gifts.

Asparagus Festival

At Tarara Winery in Leesburg, asparagus plants line the vineyard's front drive, and this Saturday, the vineyard is setting out to prove that asparagus is versatile and easily paired with a variety of wines.

Visitors will be encouraged to pick the vegetable fresh from the ground, and taste five Tarara wines paired with tasty asparagus dishes.

The afternoon includes live music, and wine specials. Tarara is located at 13648 Tarara Lane. To purchase tickets, call 703-771-7100.
