“Music Makes the World Go Round,” was the theme of Arcola Elementary School’s Fourth Grade Chorus performance Thursday afternoon at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. Representing the first Loudoun County elementary school chorus to perform at the festival, the children sang eight songs on a stage outside of the Jefferson Memorial.
“This is only the second year our school has had a choir, so this is quite an honor,” said Jennifer Leslie, Arcola Elementary School’s music teacher.
Following the children’s winter concert in late 2008, Leslie submitted an application to the festival committee, and the chorus was later chosen to perform.
Between 1:45 and 2:30, over 100 students sang for a crowd of passerby, tourists and proud parents. Their selections included the Swahili lullaby, Allunde, Alluia, Shake the Papaya down, a calypso tune, and an Israeli folk song.
