Dog lovers of all ages gathered in Sterling on Sunday for the sixth annual Barktoberfest.
The event, hosted by Melodee Music owner Robin Mock has all proceeds going to Friends of Homeless Animals, an organization based out of Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area dedicated to the rescue and placement of homeless dogs and cats. FOHA volunteers brought out several dogs and cats up for adoption to the festival to meet attendees. Some animals that have been already placed in homes wore "FOHA Alumni" neckbands.
Attendees looked through the stations set up by 27 vendors and played games. Canine visitors participated in games such as "A Dog’s Nose Knows," designed to test their ability to find a dog treat hidden under one of three food bowls. Throughout the day, nine bands appeared on three stages set around Melodee Music's building.
In the dog costume contest, decided by the level of applause from the audience, a tiny Chihuahua named Amato took first prize with his lobster costume. Second and third place, respectively, went to Lorraine, a corgy jack Russell terrier mix dressed up as a spider, and George, an unknown mix costumed as St. George, complete with halo, sword, and dragon emblem.
