High School 5, to be built in Leesburg, got christened last night. The Loudoun County School Board narrowly voted to name it Tuscarora High School after an American Indian tribe.

“It is a community school,” said board member Jennifer Bergel (Catoctin), pointing to a community committee's recommendation that the school be named after the tribe.

The board approved the name on a 5-4 vote, with Tom Reed (At Large), Priscilla B. Godfrey (Blue Ridge), Tom Marshall (Leesburg) and John Stevens (Potomac) dissenting.

A proposal to name it "Leesburg High School" was voted down after long debate, with five members against that name and two for it - Marshall and Bob Ohneiser (Broad Run). Board members Bergel and Reed abstained.

“Governor Westmoreland Davis” and “Old George Town,” two other possible names that had been mentioned, weren’t submitted to a vote.

The board also voted to explore whether to switch to a four-day school week to save money and energy, although board members and the superintendent were skeptical that a switch would be meaningful or effective.

“A lot of schools found they were open on that fifth day for all kinds of activities,” said Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick III.

“Sometimes they were paying people overtime.”

Hatrick said the school system is already a leader in energy conservation, citing Energy Star awards given to seven Loudoun schools.

The board also discussed launching a study of the feasibility of establishing a George Mason University satellite campus in the county.

“We’ve been talking about this for about 20 years,” Hatrick said.

So if you have been talking about it for 20 years, your still wasting time, money and efforts on a 20 year old idea. Get over yourself Hatrick, its another waste of money. Stop wasting my tax dollars on this crap. Control the agenda and get the meetings and ideas either moving forward or ended.

Not to sound like a broken record but....WHAT ABOUT THE WEST!! Can't we get one issue resolved (i.e. Woodgrove High School) before we embark on another! As I have heard we currently have 2 high schools in Eastern Loudoun that are not even at capacity where LVHS kids already endure over an hour bus ride only to be cramed into trailes and classrooms with over 30 kids! They are using the cafateria and auditorium for "flex" (or when I went to school - study hall) 2 teachers and over 200 kids! BUILD WOODGROVE NOW! Visit www.woodgrovenow.com and sign the petition to cut the crap and build the school NOW!

Tuscarora High School is not simply named after an American Indian tribe. It is a name that acknowledges and honors inhabitants of Loudoun County long before this country became an independent nation.

It is therefore fitting that Loudoun County offer the respect that is due The People whose forgotten history is far longer and deeper in the earth than the settlers of the past 300 years.
