Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin swept into Northern Virginia this morning to fire up GOP voters in the battleground state eight days before the presidential election, making the case that a Republican in the White House would lead to lower taxes and an economic comeback.

Palin, speaking to a partisan crowd of about 5,000 in Leesburg shortly after 10 a.m., said Republican Sen. John McCain would cut taxes and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama would raise them.

"Our opponent is not being candid with you all about his tax plan," Palin said, adding: "Senator Obama has an ideological commitment to higher taxes. . . . "Barack Obama is on the side of bigger, more controlling government and higher taxes."

At that point, the crowd burst into a chant: "Use your brain, vote McCain!"

Palin saw a sign in the crowd that echoed one of her signature phrases. She smiled and said, "You betcha, that's good."

Thousands of supporters turned out to hear the GOP vice presidential candidate at J.R.'s Festival Lakes in Leesburg. Her visit was part of an intensified effort by the McCain presidential campaign to keep the state's 13 electoral votes in the Republican column.

Polls in recent weeks have shown a tight race in Virginia between McCain (Ariz.) and Obama (Ill.). A new Washington Post poll shows that Obama has an eight-point lead over McCain, with 52 percent of likely voters in Virginia backing the Democrat and 44 percent backing the Republican. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

At the rally, signs in the crowd exhorted: "Keep Virginia Red" and "VA and DC need mavericks."

Palin said McCain would cut the business tax rate to help turn the economy around. "We will cut it so that we can keep American businesses in America," she said.

Among the warm-up speakers were Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.), who is seeking reelection, and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott York (I). York called Obama "a presidential candidate that's on training wheels" and said he was supporting McCain because "our country and indeed the world is in a time of uncertainty, and we need a person who understands those threats."

Andrea Dombrowski, 39, a Loudoun County real estate agent who came to the rally, said Palin is "a role model for women and best represents my hopes for the future of my country."

Sarah McLellan, 54, an anesthesiologist in Frederick County, Va., cited the health-care issue as a reason for her support for the GOP ticket.

"I want to hold on to what's great about our health-care system and not turn it over to the federal government," she said. "We need to get health care in the hands of individuals."

Ryan Grady, 20, a student at Radford University who is from Leesburg, said he's leaning toward McCain but is still somewhat undecided. "I think Palin's the most exciting option," he said.

A cool breeze swept through the air as the crowd stayed warm in red fleece blankets, hooded sweatshirts and jackets. They cheered Palin on and thrust red and white pom-poms into the air with each chant. The audience was a mix of men, women and families with special-needs children.

For many people, national security trumped concerns about the economic downturn.

"If our national security is not there, if there's another 9-11, there goes our economy," said 43-year-old Lynn Guntner , a Leesburg optician.

"We can't do anything if we're going to be attacked by terrorists," added Bart Wheatley, 53, of Harpers Ferry, W. Va.

Guntner attended the rally with her four children, ranging in age from 9 to 23. Like many women at the event, she said she identified with Palin's role as a working mother. "I feel like Governor Palin speaks more for the American woman," she said.

As the mother of a special-needs child, Fairfax resident Brenda Solomon, 56, said she also could relate to Palin. The governor's infant son has Down syndrome. "To me, she's the perfect candidate," Solomon said. "She's going to be a voice to the disabled community, to bring a lot of services to them."

Others at the rally said they supported McCain's strategy for the Iraq war. "I got a boy over there, it's personal to me," said Centreville resident Tom Humphries, whose 23-year-old son is serving an Army deployment in Iraq.

The gates for the event opened at 7 a.m. and Palin began her 30-minute speech at about 10:15 a.m. By 9 a.m., roads near the event were clogged with two-way traffic as cars headed to the rally and commuters left the area, according to Leesburg police officials. Most of the congestion was on Fort Evans Road and River Creek Parkway.

Solomon said she was stuck on the River Creek Parkway ramp for more than 30 minutes. "It was horrendous," she said. "We were determined we were going to wait."

Traffic cleared up by 12:30 p.m., as cars leaving the rally dumped out onto the Route 15 bypass, Potomac Station Drive and Battlefield Parkway.

Guess no one got a chance to ask her about all the AIP cronies she surrounds herself with in Alaska. They only want Alaska to secede from the US, but hey, that's not un-patriotic. Neither I guess is the former leader hating America so much that he had wanted to be buried in Canada. I'm sure the anesthesiologist also related to Palin since I'm sure they both wear clothes from Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Barneys. Well, I'm a middle class woman from NOVA and I shop at TJ Maxx and Target, because I'm too worried about filling up my car and heating my home. Funny--before GW Buxh, I could shop at J Crew and LL Bean no problem.

OTH, your frustration is showing. What you "heard" is false. It's a rumor based on the fact that John Podesta published a book over the summer that contains a hypothetical speech by a fictional composite president-elect. It was written before Obama was even the nominee, and when Podesta was in fact supporting Senator Clinton. Try to remember: You can't believe everything you read on blogs, even if you really, really want to. Again, it would be nice if everyone on both sides could at least try to be civil. We cannot afford a divided country. We're all in this together.

Best you can do? Ok. I'd agree that hanging Gov. Palin in effigy is in poor taste and possibly even hateful. But if you're going to go for the equivalency thing, what about the Obama who was lynched? How about the now routine vandalism of yard signs - using some of the very same phrases you employ here?

And even with that, what on earth are you talking about? I pointed to an example of republicans who repeatedly hit an individual with a cane while he tried to ask Rep. Wolf a question, and committed assault and battery against another individual. These are crimes against individuals. You're pointing out crimes against good taste.

Not equivalent at all.

Thank heavens he was only hit with a cane.

Watch the video. I'm sure people will see what they want - in my opinion, saying "Sir, please don't" when you've been struck by a metal cane is hardly being aggressive or offensive.

Having people around who ask questions and tape your reply - or lack thereof - is, I'm sure, disconcerting to the representative. Possibly not used to the technology. But frankly, if you can't handle a couple of people asking inconvenient, or even impolite, questions, you don't deserve the job.

OTH,
A few Obama haters, such as your dear dim self, think that Obama is the cause of all the evils in the world. You think that because you want to believe it. It is not true and your ignorance will not change that. I do not read the Republican (or democratic) sponsored propaganda and believe every damn word of it. You do, because you want to believe and you'd rather let others with more imagination do your thinking rather than have to think yourself.

Take the claim that this Ayers chap (with the terrorist links) is somehow a base for Obama's political career. The analysis of the truth doesn't stack up. The turth is far more mundane, Obama did attend a coffee meeting at Bill Ayers's home shortly after declaring his intention to run for the Illinois State Senate back in '95, but this was one of a number of informal gatherings. It was no way a launch pad for Obama, and was in no way a pivotal moment. It was an unfortunate encounter, but most major politicians have had them at times. At the time Ayres was active - Obama was a kid. Dislike him for what he is, not because of the cartoons from the rabid right wing.

Now - this is just one example of stretched truths leading to big fabrications - and they happen both ways. McCain is often accused of things he didn't actually do or say. If you had a brain and you really wanted to think, you'd look for the facts yourself instead of just repeating all the rabid propaganda.

MCCAIN GAINS IN ALL THREE TRACKING POLLS

Dick Morris, Former Advisor to Bill Clinton

Zogby, Rasmussen and Gallup all report McCain closing to 5 points back. Zogby had him 12 back, Rasmussen 8 and Gallup 6 in their previous polling. McCain's use of the Joe the Plumber and the tax issue in his ads is working!

Unilaterally, John McCain agreed to disarm himself by refusing to use perhaps his most potent weapon in exposing Barack Obama: the Democrats' relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. The McCain campaign and, at its direction, the Republican Party, have banned use of footage of Rev. Wright from their campaign commercials. Perhaps for fear of being accused of racism, they are not bringing up the single most compromising association in Obama's past - his close liaison with Rev. Wright.

But it does not matter that Rev. Wright is black, white, or brown...or purple. What matters is that he spews hatred of the United States and that Obama was an active participant in his church. Or are we supposed to believe that Obama regularly attended church with Wright for two decades, chose the Reverend to baptize his children and officiate at his wedding, titled his book Audacity of Hope after a sermon of the Reverend's, but did not know of his anti-American views? Nonsense.

As we enter the final week, this election is not yet over. Zogby shows Obama's lead collapsing from 12 points on Thursday of last week to just five points over this past weekend. Other polls have Obama's lead in the 5-7 point range, little enough ground to close in six more days. Only surveys that have quotas for large number of Democratic participants show Obama's lead to be in double digits.

If you listen to Republicans, Obama is an unqualified, inexperienced, anti-American Muslim AND domestic terrorist, liberal commie who wasn't even born in the US who will appoint Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to the Supreme Court, and turn the US into the next Soviet Union within one month of taking office. I assume we'll all have to line up to get toilet paper as well. Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm looking forward to seeing what a Muslim Commie can do as president.

And OTH...the ONLY polling data to pay attention to is Zogby, sometimes Rasmussen (I believe he has recently fallen into a trap of trying to set himself up as the first one to call McCain), but the end-all poll is here....

in an interview with Philip Gourevitch of the New Yorker, Palin explained the windfall profits tax that she imposed on the oil industry in Alaska as a mechanism for ensuring that Alaskans “share in the wealth” generated by oil companies: And Alaska—we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs. … It’s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans.

And WHO is she accusing of wanting to "spread the wealth" in her little pep rallies?

boomerbaby54,

Annenberg Political FactCheck has been shown to be in-the-tank for Obama. Secondly-Tax increases- BECAUSE 40% of the folks who'd be getting the handout from OBAMA don't file tax returns now. They've never had to pay into the system. Ever. Not once. But they'll get money back. Meanwhile YOU will be paying for it. Obama's charge that he won't be raising taxes on anyone under $250K is not based in truth. See, technically, when he does not renew the Bush tax cuts, and the rates go back to what they were in 2000, EVERYBODY's taxes will go back to what they were in 2000. But because HE didn't ACTUALLY increase your taxes, HE feels that he's not to blame. But there you'll be...with a larger portion of your money gone... unless you didn't file at all, or you got a refund in 2000.-and to your final rampage-
I swear ignorance is rampant. The biggest difference in the oil revenues in Alaska and the spreading of the wealth by Obama??? The FACT that the Alaskan Constitution clearly states that the oil located in and under Alaska BELONGS to the residents. You really need to read more before you post about things that demonstrate your ignorance of the subject matter.

honchonumberone,
The answer to both of your questions is NOPE. It is because they post, in a story about a shooting, that it is Obama's fault. That is a troll and that is what they do.

For all you McCain voters! do you really want to keep me from going to college because McCain is going to raise taxes on my family? McCain hasan't suffered and work hard for his education like Obama has! My family is of Hispanic heritage and are legal the immigration issues don't matter to us BUT we want a canidate who will stop the war and get the money back to the country who really needs it THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

I am so sorry young lady, I do hope you go to collage but remember the world needs good ditch diggers and hambuger flippers too. But let me clear your clouded mind. McCain spent 7 1/2 years in a POW camp SUFFERERING for this country. His education was at the NAVEL ACADAMY which requires several years of MILITARY Service commitment just to attend. I admire your desire to make the UNITED STATES better but it takes more than money! Please do your homework before you make statements which are at best, inaccurate. Good luck and god bless.

At the Naval Academy John McCain graduated near the bottom of his class-790 out of 795.
John McCain did suffer for our country but let's get the facts straight: he spent 5 1/2 years as a POW not 7 1/2
And it is spelled COLLEGE not COLLAGE.

Who cares what his class rank was at the Naval Academy? Let's get the facts straight, he stayed longer in that hellhole than he had to because of his honor and commitment to his country and his fellow soldiers. Disagree with him on the issues all you want but dont try to diminish his service to our country. He has earned that, no matter what you think of his stance on the issues. I cannot believe you would try to make such a big deal out of someone making a mistake on the length of time the man spent as a POW. Lets see you try to make it 5 minutes without your remote or your cell phone you spoiled lazy entitled tool.

Funnyguyva brought up his education at the Naval Academy, I was giving a fact about that education. As far as his mistake about his time as a POW I was merely correcting him. Saying I was trying to diminish what he went through is really reaching. Nowhere in my post do I say anything negative about what John McCain went through, unless you count saying that he "did suffer for our country" as negative.

Come on; of course you were trying to diminish what he did. Why else would you bring up the fact that he finished where he did at the Naval academy and why was it so important to correct funnyguy on such an insignificant matter. Would you respect McCain more if he had spent 7 1/2 yrs as a POW instead of 5 1/2. Would it make you vote for him? I think what you were trying to do is diminish his service to our country. You can respect what he did and still vote for Obama. You dont have to tear down McCain.

To Gabinomac: It is your responsibility to earn your college education, not have it given to you but the taxpayers of the U.S.A. I paid for my college education through loans, grants, financial aid, and a lot of hours working each summer. My parents paid for me to go through their guarantee student loans. So why don't you take the time to earn your education so you will actually appreciate it when you are paying your own bills? Because it is not my job to educate you beyond your 12th year. It is now your turn. Take it.
