Alex Aust graduated from Loudoun Country Day School's eighth-grade class of 2005. The Sterling resident, now a senior at Bullis School, returned to LCDS Monday morning to sign her letter of intent to play lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

Aust said she chose to sign her letter at Loudoun Country Day because the Leesburg school was where she started her academic career and where she began playing competitive team sports.

A member of the National Honor Society, Aust was also an honorable mention All-Met last season for a Bullis team that finished No. 9 in the Washington Post's area rankings. She has also played basketball at Bullis ever since her freshman year.

"I learned to compete in basketball and lacrosse here at this school," Aust said Monday to an assembly of faculty, students and staff at LCDS. "My coaches inspired me to try harder. I also learned to strive academically. I chose the University of Maryland because I know I will not be playing lacrosse in four or five years, as there is not a professional league. However, I will want to figure out what to do with the rest of my life, and I realize the importance of academics, beyond lacrosse. Again, thank you for all that you have done for me."

Aust signed the letter with her father, Jon, and brother Chris and sister Nicole by her side.
