Former civil rights leader James L. Bevel has been released on bond after being convicted of having sex with one of his daughters and sentenced to 15 years in prison, attorneys in the case said today.
Bevel was granted a $30,000 bond on Nov. 4 by Loudoun County Circuit Court Judge Burke F. McCahill pending an appeal of his case. He was released three days later and is residing in Springfield, attorneys said.
Bevel is suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer, and his bond included the conditions that he remain in Virginia and not have unsupervised contact with minors.
