Seven days ago, the Chantilly girls’ lacrosse players walked off the field at Fairfax High stunned that their undefeated season ended in the final seconds of the Concorde District final against Robinson.
But the Chargers’ captain, senior Brittany Griel, made a keen observation after the loss. Noting that a berth to the Northern Region tournament was clinched, she acknowledged that the doorway to a state title was still open. “Our season is just beginning,” she said then.
Chantilly Routs Stone Bridge
Last night, No. 7 Chantilly (14-1) kept that season going in dominant fashion, beating Liberty District champion Stone Bridge (14-2) in the Northern Region quarterfinals, 18-5. Sophomore midfielder Liz Dunwoody had a season-high six goals and an assist, and Griel had four scores and assisted on three others.
“We went in with a very specific game plan, to shut down their top three scorers, [Lauren] Guisti, [Meghan] DeMartino, and [Kristen] Pascale,” said Chantilly Coach Michele Gates. “We shut them down and broke their zone defense, and that seemed to work to our advantage.”
Guisti, a talented sophomore, was held scoreless until the second half, when the game was out of reach (Chantilly led by 10 goals at halftime). She finished with one goal, as junior Katie Stillwell played solid defense on her all night.
“Katie did exactly what we asked her to do. She kept the ball out of Lauren’s stick,” said Gates said.
Chantilly led 3-0 in the opening six minutes and kept Stone Bridge off the board until the 16-minute mark of the first half. Stillwell scored three goals for the Chargers, while Christina Patten and Jessica Dennis each scored twice and had an assist.
