T-Shirt Design Contest Celebrates Water
To celebrate National Drinking Water Week, Loudoun Water is hosting a T-shirt design contest for Loudoun County high school students.
Students are encouraged to come up with a design or slogan that fits on an 8.5-inch-square sheet of paper and conveys the theme of wise water use. The winning design will be printed on 1,000 T-shirts that will be given away this summer. Details are available at www.loudounwater.org/tshirtcontest.
Loudoun Water also is conducting a survey at www.loudounwater.org to raise awareness about water conservation and is encouraging teachers and parents to visit www.loudounwater.org/educational for activities and lesson plans on the topic.
Hazardous Waste Collection Set at NVCC
The county Office of Solid Waste Management will sponsor a household hazardous waste collection from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 31 at Northern Virginia Community College, 1000 Harry Flood Byrd Hwy., Sterling.
The office will accept oil-based paints, paint thinners and solvents, corrosives, insecticides, fuels, photographic chemicals, oxidizers, fluorescent bulbs and household batteries. Waste should be placed in labeled, leak-proof containers.
Motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, lead-acid batteries and propane tanks will not be accepted. They can be dropped off at the county's Solid Waste Management Facility on Evergreen Mills Road.

Purcellville Seeks Input on Town Transportation
Purcellville is hosting a second public input session on the future of transportation in the town.
The session will be from noon to 3 p.m. June 14 at Town Hall, 130 E. Main St.
Members of the town's transportation plan project advisory committee, town staff and the town's consultant, Kimley-Horn and Associates, will facilitate small and large group discussions on transportation needs.

Event to Raise Awareness of Mental-Health Issues
In recognition of Mental Health and Wellness month, the county Community Services Board and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services are hosting a free event from 1 to 4 p.m. May 18 at the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center in Purcellville.
"Sunday in the Park with Friends" will include live music, games, a community art project and food. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about mental-health issues. County mental-health professionals will attend.
