Leesburg Man Gets Five Years for Drunk Driving

A repeat drunk-driver was sentenced yesterday in Loudoun County to five years in prison, the maximum allowed under Virginia law for his offense, Commonwealth's Attorney James E. Plowman said today.

Michael J. Maddox, 45, of Leesburg, had pleaded guilty in March to committing a fourth alcohol-related offense within the last 10 years, Plowman said. In 2002, he was found guilty of aggravated involuntary manslaughter for a drunk-driving incident in Clarke County, Va., that resulted in the death of his girlfriend, Plowman said.

"The Court's ability and obligation to rehabilitate offenders ceases once it becomes clear that no set of circumstances can effectively redirect their behavior," Plowman said in a statement. "Mr. Maddox crossed that line years ago and that leaves the system with only one option, which is to warehouse those individuals for as long as possible in an effort to protect our communities."

Circuit Court Judge Thomas D. Horne handed down the sentence.

Let's hope he spends the whole five years there, not getting out on parole in 18 months.

I just can't think of a good reason why he didn't get this sentence sooner.
