After several days of record-breaking increases, the price of a gallon of gas has surpassed the $4 mark in the Washington metro area.

According to AAA, motorists in the region are forking over $4.026 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. That number includes the entire metro area because AAA doesn't break down the numbers specifically for Loudoun.

The price is about 94 cents higher today than a year ago. It's up 34 cents in the past month.

"The fear here is that we've crossed a Rubicon," said John Townsend, spokesman for AAA. "Normally prices plateau after Memorial Day. . . . But we still have this lag between the price of gasoline and the price of crude. We don't know when these prices will come down. I don't think we're going to get much relief this summer."

The average price in Virginia is $3.926 per gallon, while the average price in the District is nearly $4.09.

The most expensive gas in the country is in California, at $4.46 a gallon.

The Washington Post contributed to this report.
