A man was taken into custody Friday in South Riding several hours after he made statements regarding a possible bomb in a box that turned out to be empty.
Sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell said the 63-year-old man from Prince George's County, Md., drove his car to two deputies at the Riding Plaza and tried to hand them a box at about 8 a.m. Friday. The man then made statements regarding a bomb, authorities said.
"He said 'I have something for you,'" Troxell said. "He brought out a box and made a reference to a possible bomb."
Deputies established a perimeter around the man's car Friday morning and took him into custody. The man's name wasn't being released.
The bomb squad was called to the scene and a robot was used to open the box, which had nothing inside. A portion of the South Riding shopping center was closed off until about 2 p.m.
Lt. Col. Ronald Gibson, of the Loudoun sheriff's office, said the man was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation. Charges are possible, Gibson said.
