Big First Inning, Lightning Do in Spartans

With senior ace Cole Shain on the hill, the Broad Run Spartans were looking to bounce back from a heart-breaking 5-4 loss to Brentsville in Friday’s Region II championship game. Instead, the host Powhatan Indians jumped all over the Spartans, racing out to an 11-1 lead after two innings and never looking back, winning a weather-shortened game by a 12-6 margin.

Broad Run (21-5) pulled Shain and replaced him with senior J.P. Devlin who held the Indians to a single run the rest of the way while the Spartans clawed their way back into the game. Following a lightning delay after the second inning, senior first baseman Ryan Diviney smacked a three-run home run to cut the deficit. Senior catcher Tommy Meier also provided some offense, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, but the Spartans couldn’t complete the comeback.

After another lightning delay forced a second stoppage of play in the sixth inning, the game was called, with the score reverted back to what it was following five completed innings. Powhatan (22-3) advances to the state semifinals on Friday while the season is now over for the Spartans.

Broad Run had a tremendous 2008 campaign, winning the Dulles District regular season and tournament titles and nearly taking the Region II title before falling in the final inning at Brentsville. The Spartans lose 10 seniors from an experienced team that featured numerous all-District and all-Region selections.
