Town Cites Water Thefts

Purcellville is having "a significant problem" with water thefts by contractors doing work such as landscaping, construction and filling pools, officials said last week.

Town officials said there have been three arrests for water theft in the past few weeks. They reminded residents and businesses to be on the lookout for such incidents, saying rewards are available for those who help the town catch and prosecute water thieves.

Only firetrucks on official business or town employees in properly marked town vehicles have the authority to withdraw water from fire hydrants within Purcellville, officials said in the announcement.

Speakers at the forum, hosted by U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.), will include David Goodfriend, director of the Loudoun Health Department; Jorge Arias, manager of the disease-carrying insect program for the Fairfax County Health Department; and Samuel Shor, a George Washington University associate clinical professor. They will discuss how to check for and protect against ticks as well as the symptoms and treatment of acute Lyme disease.

Lyme disease, which can cause rashes, fever and fatigue, is often transmitted through a black-legged tick, also known as a deer tick. Health officials in the region have reported an increased number of cases of Lyme disease recently.

For more information about the event, contact Wolf's Washington office at 202-225-5136.

Finalists in Logo Contest

Two Loudoun County girls were finalists in a contest to design a logo for the Special Olympics Virginia Bus Pull, part of the Sept. 6 Dulles Day Family Festival at Washington Dulles Airport.

Kaycee Delitta, 8, finished in second place, and Lauren Forcey, 5, was the runner-up, Special Olympics officials said.

Azaz Umar, 13, of Alexandria won the contest. His drawing, which was chosen from among dozens of entries, will be used on posters, pledge sheets and T-shirts.
