A study by Forbes magazine ranks Loudoun County the second-richest county in the nation.
Loudoun, with a median income of $99,371, was ranked No. 1 last year. It was surpassed by neighboring Fairfax County, which had a median income of $100,318, Forbes said.
The list was compiled based on 2006 Census data.
Nods also went to other Northern Virginia counties. Arlington, No. 9, had a median income of $87,350; Prince William, which ranked No. 18, had a median income of $80,783.
Suburban Howard and Montgomery counties in Maryland were ranked No. 3 and No. 8. The median income in Howard was $92,260, while in Montgomery, the median income was $87,624.
Forbes credited well-paid government employees, lobbyists and lawyers for the wealth in the Washington suburbs.
