If Loudoun hockey fans were hoping for a matchup between Stone Bridge and Broad Run in Wednesday’s semifinal games in Reston, they will be sorely disappointed.

Broad Run is out of the running after losing 4-3 Monday to Langley at the Kettler Capitals IcePlex in Arlington.

Stone Bridge, which topped Chantilly 12-2, will face Langley at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a semifinal matchup at SkateQuest of Reston.

“We’ve never (mercy ruled) this team in eight years,” Stone Bridge head coach David Lynch said after the game. Monday's matchup, however, was a different story, as the Bulldogs ended the game with 5:15 left in the third period and 12 points on the scoreboard.

Garrett Quinn led on the ice against the Chargers with four goals, and was helped out by Brandon Ruhe, Brendan Ahearn, Brian Bock and Richard Davidson. Ahearn, Sean Hollern and William Bock each had two goals. Nicholas Wirth ended the game with a goal and two assists.

Broad Run's Connor Cunningham looks for a shot against Langley goalie Jay Williams during the shootout after a scoreless overtime Monday.

“It was the Quinn show,” Lynch said. “The top two lines did real well.”

Stone Bridge and Chantilly both started out with strong skating in the first period, but after the first five minutes the Bulldogs halved the ice and kept the puck on offense, attacking the Chargers early and often.

“We really wanted to attack them,” Lynch said. “We were kind of surprised they weren’t attacking us so much. They have seven or eight guys that can really fly, and I wasn’t expecting this.”

The Chargers answered the Bulldogs' first goal within a minute.

Chantilly put another goal on the scoreboard in the second when Stewart Bell connected with Pat Kerbuski after skating around the Stone Bridge defense, but that was the last shot they took at the Bulldogs' goal.

“That last goal was really bad, because our defense was just standing around,” Lynch said.

After putting up four more goals during the second, Stone Bridge went on the attack again early in the third and put up two quick goals, but would go another seven minutes before William Bock connected with Wirth for the game-ending goal.

Langley 4, Broad Run 3

It took three periods, a five-minute overtime period and a shootout for Langley to topple Broad Run on Monday after the Spartans tied the game with 5:14 left in the second -- less than a minute after the Saxons had gone on top.

Spartans Kyle Ward and Jeremy Davis put up two goals in the first to push Broad Run ahead 2-0. After a goal in the final two minutes of the first, Langley rallied midway through in the second and put up two more goals in under two minutes, driving the score to 3-2.

The Saxons' advantage on the scoreboard didn't last long.

Broad Run came back in less than a minute and tied the score, and the two teams spent the third period going back and forth without a goal.

The Saxons missed a chance to take the lead as early penalties in the third forced the Spartans to play two men down, but Broad Run held out on defense and cleared the puck just as their fifth man came back on the ice.

As the overtime ended, both teams got ready for the shootout. But Jay Williams was able to slam the door on the four Broad Run shooters as Hunter McFadden and Kevin McCarthy got past Sean Thompson, and Langley came away with the 4-3 win.
