Another game, another dominating defensive performance by Stone Bridge High's football team.
The Bulldogs, who had given up just seven points in their last two games, held the McLean High Highlanders to 68 total yards — with just 24 of those coming before Stone Bridge brought in its reserves — in a 38-0 road victory Friday.
"I think our strength is defense," Bulldogs coach Mickey Thompson said. "McLean has moved the ball on people, and I thought we pretty much controlled the whole game on defense."
Since a 41-14 loss at Robinson High on Sept. 8, Stone Bridge has given up just one touchdown and that was a fourth-quarter score by Loudoun Valley in a 49-7 Bulldogs win.
"We had a bad half, some things got out of hand and we didn't do a good job," Thompson said of the loss to Robinson. "We really want to be solid now on defense. I think we're playing very well."
It would be hard to argue after the Bulldogs' performance Friday. Stone Bridge stuffed McLean's running game, holding the Highlanders to minus-3 yards on 17 carries, and kept their passing attack under wraps, as well.

McLean quarterbacks Gregory Love and William Hecht completed a total of 11 passes in 21 attempts, but for just 71 yards — an average of just 3.4 yards per attempt.
Stone Bridge spent much of the first half focusing on its passing game. The Bulldogs opened their first drive in the shotgun formation rather than their customary single-wing, and junior quarterback Patrick Thompson hit Jeron Gouveia for a 55-yard score through the air on the team's first play.
"We just need to work on the passing game," coach Thompson said. "We came out and were going to throw a lot. We know what we can do in the single wing. We've been running it for 10 years now."
Patrick Thompson followed up the quick start with an interception on the the Bulldogs' next drive, but bounced back to lead the team on a seven-play, 58-yard drive culminating in a 28-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Moody.
Stone Bridge vs. McLean
"It was my mistake," Patrick Thompson said of the interception. "I should have thrown to someone else, but I was fine. I forgot about it and just went out there and played the game."
Thompson finished 10-of-15 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns and 14 rushing yards on eight carries. His final touchdown was an 18-yard strike to Gouveia with 1:25 left in the second quarter.
Kareem Alexander led the Bulldogs with 74 yards on nine carries, including a 19-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. Gouveia added 29 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter, which put the mercy rule into effect. Matt Irwin rushed five times for 17 yards and had two receptions for 22 yards, and Moody caught six passes for 88 yards.
Stone Bridge next plays host to South Lakes High at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
