PARKING

* Hourly: In front of the main terminal. $4 per hour, up to $36 per 24 hours. No charge if exiting within the first 20 minutes.

* Daily: In the two garages closest to the terminal. Garage 1 is connected to the terminal via an underground passageway. Garage 2 is connected to the terminal's third level by a bridge. $5 per hour, up to $15 per 24 hours. No charge if exiting within the first 20 minutes.

* Valet parking: Available daily through hourly parking (follow signs) in front of main terminal 24 hours a day. $30 for the first 24 hours, $17 each additional day (703-572-4540).

* Cellphone lot: Drivers waiting for passengers can wait in this free lot at Rudder Road and Autopilot Drive for up to one hour. Driver must remain with the vehicle.

* More info:703-572-4500, or check radio station 530 AM. All lots accept cash and credit cards. Pay & Go machines are on lower level of the Main Terminal near the east and west exit doors and on the pedestrian bridge of Garage 2.

GETTING THERE

* By bus: Metrobus runs a D.C.-Dulles bus (5A) that originates at the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station and stops at the Rosslyn Metro, the Tysons-Westpark Transit Station (at Jones Branch Drive and Spring Hill Road in McLean) and the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride Lot (on Sunrise Valley Drive in Fairfax). Buses depart L'Enfant Plaza every 35 to 45 minutes from 4:50 a.m. to 10:38 p.m. weekdays and depart nearly hourly from 5:30 a.m. to 10:35 p.m. weekends. Buses depart Dulles about every 40 minutes from 5:50 a.m. to 11:40 p.m. weekdays and hourly from 6:32 a.m. until 11:40 p.m. weekends. The trip to or from L'Enfant Plaza takes 56 minutes and costs $3 each way. Info: 202-637-7000, www.wmata.com.

In Loudoun County, Virginia Transit also offers hourly service on its Dulles to Dulles Connector, between the airport and Dulles Town Center (at Routes 7 and 28), with five stops in between. Buses depart Dulles Town Center hourly from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and depart Dulles hourly from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The trip to or from Dulles Town Center takes 28 minutes and costs 50 cents. * By subway/bus: The Washington Flyer express bus travels from the West Falls Church Metro station to Dulles every 30 minutes starting at 6:15 a.m. weekdays and 8:15 a.m. weekends and holidays until 10:45 p.m. daily. Buses depart Dulles every 30 minutes starting at 5:45 a.m. weekdays and 7:45 a.m. weekends and holidays until 10:15 p.m. daily. The trip is 25 minutes and costs $9 one way or $16 round trip. * By taxi: Fares are about $55 one way from downtown Washington, $58 from Reagan National Airport, $55 from Bethesda, $40 from West Falls Church Metro station and $115 from BWI.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT'S HISTORY

1958: Construction begins.



1962: Airport, Dulles Access Road open.



1966: Airport handles more than 1 million passengers.



1976: The Concorde first flies to Dulles.



1982: Main terminal additions provide more gates and mobile lounge waiting areas.



1983: Access road extension to Interstate 66 is completed; temporary Concourse C/D opens.



1987: Airport handles more than 10 million passengers.



1991: International Arrivals Building opens.



1996: Main terminal expansion is completed, bringing terminal to 1,240 feet in length and 1.1 million square feet.



1998: Concourse B, first permanent concourse, opens with 20 gates.



1999: Regional Concourse A opens. United Airlines makes Dulles it East Coast hub.



2000: Airport handles 20 million passengers.



2004: Low-cost carrier Independence Air begins operation at Dulles



2007: A study says a rail tunnel under Tysons Corner would take nearly three years longer to build than an elevated track, would cost at least $160 million more and would jeopardize $900 million in federal money for the Metrorail extension to Dulles. Virginia transportation officials later announce an agreement with a private contractor to begin construction of the rail extension, with an elevated segment through Tysons Corner.
