The Stone Bridge High School cheerleading squad took home second place at the Liberty District Finals Tuesday evening at South Lakes High School. Meanwhile, Broad Run's cheerleading squad won in the Dulles District Tuesday night at Heritage.

Potomac Falls came in second in the Dulles District competition.

“It’s kind of a big shock to us because we came out and gave it our all,” Stone Bridge senior captain Sharda Disney said.

The Bulldogs -- themselves accustomed to grabbing the coveted first-place spot -- congratulated the Langley High School cheerleaders with smiles and hugs for their win.

“We went out and did the best that we could,” Stone Bridge junior squad member Megan Knodell said. “Langley is really good. They’re really good competition.”

The Stone Bridge cheerleaders have an arsenal of title wins over the last several years, including earning the past three state championships. The squad is rebuilding this year with a new head coach and nine new members.

Despite the changes, the squad last week won the semi-district competition and the first round of the district finals.

“You can’t win them all, I guess,” said Cindy Campbell, mother of junior squad member Courtney Campbell. “They worked hard and I think they had a great performance. They did an awesome job -- second place is not bad.”

Although the squad didn’t win this one, team members and fans said they have high hopes for the road to state.

“We’re just ready for regionals because we’re going to come back and show them that we can win,” Disney said. “The next three days of practice we’re going to work harder, put in some new stuff, and get ready.”

In the next week the team will focus on stunting, voices and projection -- and add difficulty to stunts for extra points.

“It comes down to us putting our best routine on the floor, making sure we’re hitting everything, and try to maximize the score sheet,” Head Coach Brandi Sims said. “I try not to worry about comparing us to anybody else because as far as I’m concerned we have to do our best routine.”

This Saturday, the Bulldogs will compete in the regional semifinals before turning their attention to the regional finals on Nov. 3. The state competition will be Nov. 10 in Richmond.

Why all this coverage on Stone Bridge. You had 9 Loudoun County schools compete for the Dulles district championship in cheerleading last night and you choose to cover a competition that has 1 Loudoun County School? Maybe you should rename yourselves the Stone Bridge Extra.

Maybe they should. Everyone loves a winner! Get over it!

It may seem like a lot of coverage now, but in three years of winning VHSL state championships, the SBHS cheerleaders received no coverage till now. It is a great and pleasant surprise to see it. Instead of being unhappy about this, you should be happy to see that cheerleading is finally being recognized as a sport and that it will hopefully open up coverage to the other teams in the area. Don't worry, be happy :o)

It is not the fact that cheerleading is being covered believe that, it is the fact that it is Stone Bridge cheerleading. Obviously the green eyed monster is rearing it's UGLY head here! How you doin :)

You are correct jjellis, it is great that cheerleading is getting coverage, since there are so many out there that do not consider it a sport. But, as was mentioned earlier, there were 9 other teams competing in Loudoun County last night and why were they not mentioned? Trust me, there is no jealousy here, I have seen Stone Bridge this year and there is no way they will be winning states a 4th year in a row. Why do you think their coach left, he wanted to end on a good note!

Posted by tennisne1001 (anonymous) on October 24, 2007 at 3:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

First of all, there was no coverage probably because no one made Loudoun Extra aware about the competition. Second, I'm sorry you feel it necessary to slam teenage girls like that.

WOW! Tennisne1001 are you really putting down teenagers!?! I am a SBHS parent and we wish ALL of our Lodoun County teams well in all their endevours, even when they are competing against us.

What the SBHS cheer team has accomplished is amazing and instead of trying to tear them down, you should be cheering them on as they try to make history and put Loudoun County on the map.

Give credit where credit is due. They are a group of talented young women, as with all of the LC cheer teams and you should be ashamed of yourself for your being so caddy and petty.

Good thing the green eyed monster (tennisne) won't be juding regions or states for Stone Bridge! Keep hope alive tennisne, keep hope alive! Maybe we can have another team from Loudoun win this year since the all knowing monster is so sure it won't be Stone Bridge. Go Panthers!

I think that whether sb wins states or not again this year they deserve to be covered. Im a cheerleader in a different county and i encourage positive coverage even if it is not about my team. Lets not bash people because whether you win staes or place last, what is done out on that mat is hard.

Hey, can anyone say OVERKILL. The coverage Im seeing in the local media is suffocating. It's like bad aftershave! Wait until you accomplish something and then brag about it, but stop riding the coattails of past years accomplishments and stop wasting these good folks time with all the coverage. No wonder other schools aren't getting covered.

Posted by casey.romeo (anonymous) on October 30, 2007 at 1 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Casey, you poor poor person. Not sure if I feel more sorry for you being suffocated by the overkill of SB cheerleaders in the news. Or that you actually have smelled bad aftershave. By the way, I'd love to hear the accomplishments of your daughter's team.

Well larryhalljr, first of all how do you know that casey.romeo is a parent? Second, you are obviously a Stone Bridge fan, tell me what have they accomplished this year? Not much!

Posted by tennisne1001 (anonymous) on October 31, 2007 at 2:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tennisne1001, I could go into all the technical babble about how you find out who is who(via IP address and IP trace) on the internet, but I'm sure you know that since you know everything. As for what has Stone Bridge accomplished this year, They won Park View competition, they finished 2nd at districts, they've finished first in the prelim for districts and semi-regionals and are competing at the northern regional finals. All that with 9 new girls, 3 of whom never cheered before, Only 2 seniors(1 a move in), new coach, only 5 girls are currently doing all stars and 2 girls off last years(that had fulls) team were unable to compete due to personal reasons. And then there are the injuries and concussions in which other girls had to jump in the day before a major competition. I have yet to see what you and your team has accomplished. You're more concerned about SB.

Just one last post. It is pretty obvious from the terminology used that casey is probably an "adult." It is sad to know that adults find it necessary to be hurtful to teens. It is also interesting to note that the nicest comment from anyone came from a young girl on another squad, who introduced herself to our girls at Regionals. Maybe sometimes the young are wiser than their elders.

Please remember that the girls you are attacking read this too. They have tried hard, felt their hearts break at times, come back again. They don't understand all this hatred and it actually gives the cheer community a black eye. I'm hoping that whoever's squad were to win states this year that the Loudoun Extra would still feel kindly to the cheer teams and want to cover it. I support all the Loudoun teams. I was just as happy for Broad Run and Potomac last year in the fantastic job they did representing our area and was hoping they'd do as good or better this year. I always thought that others felt the same towards SBHS, but apparently a few do not.

Posted by ellisjj2002 (anonymous) on October 31, 2007 at 11:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You're all missing the point. This has nothing to do with the girls, but everything to do with overzealous parents who have nothing better to do than contact all the media outlets to get their team face-time and one-up all the other programs. Face it, it's pretty transparent. There's nothing worse than reading about a team finishing second but would have won it if they weren't deducted points for whatever reason. Sounds like whining. I personally like the approach that PF and BR HS teams have taken. They don't seek publicity. They don't feed on media coverage, but would take it if approached. So stop pushing SB Cheer down our throats. We're not buying.

Posted by casey.romeo (anonymous) on November 1, 2007 at 1:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Casey, the problem is you're not making a point. All you're doing is whining. Nobody asked you to read the article and if you didn't have anything good to say then why respond, keep your negative thoughts to yourself? So, if BR was approached, Like SB was, it's ok to have an article written about them(according to you)? By the way, SB was approached at the beginning of the year about doing an article(why not call the post to verify). You only threw in the other loudoun school(PF) to throw off your identity. Let's face it, you feel your cheer team is the best and should have had an article written about them. Also, why don't you complain about other sports? I'm sure your HS isn't getting the coverage you expect in your mind.

thanks for calling me nice, but to be honest the sb girls are the nice ones. After results were announced last week, they came and hugged my team. Some of our girls knew each other, but i had someone hug me i had never met, and it was so nice, because they didn't have to be nice to us. If we can come together even after competing against each other, I don't understand how people can be so hurtful when they are nice and don't deserve this critism. Good luck tomorrow girls!!!

Posted by junegurl6790 (anonymous) on November 2, 2007 at 11:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Let me just say that all of the girls on the cheer teams know other girls on other high school teams. If you ever noticed at the competitions, each school actually cheers for the other schools. They know the other girls and support them. Of course SB wants to win. All of the schools want to win. They all do their very best to win. But, the girls, as opposed to some of the parents (after observing the negative comments here), work very hard, do their best to win, and if they do not win first, they congratulate whatever team did. These SB girls should be an inspiration to us adults. We can only hope to be as mature as the SB cheerleaders are when WE grow up.
