Briar Woods tuned up for the playoffs by defeating Freedom, 49-14, in the second annual Bird Bowl on Friday night.

The Falcons (7-3, 4-3 AA Dulles) will be the No. 3 seed in next week's Region II Division 3 playoffs and will face second-seeded Millbrook. The Eagles (0-10, 0-7) fell behind 35-14 at halftime and never recovered.

Briar Woods jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game on a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Munro to wide receiver Tim King. They would hook up on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1 minute 47 seconds left in the first quarter to stake the Falcons to a 14-0 lead.

King, who had four receptions for 69 yards, finished the regular season with 49 receptions for 751 yards and 13 touchdowns.

"I owe a lot to my quarterback and the offensive line," King said. "Alex threw good passes to me."

King wasn't the only offensive player shining for Briar Woods Friday, with Matt Eisenman rushing 12 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, one in each half. J.T. Bailey added 64 yards and a touchdown.

Jeff Pugh accounted for Freedom's two touchdowns, rushing for scores of 60 and 65 yards. He finished with 13 carries for 173 yards.

"He's an outstanding kid," Freedom Coach Tom McIntyre said. "He's going to be an outstanding running back before he leaves here."

Briar Woods completed its scoring in the second half with a seven-yard touchdown run by Eisenman late in the third quarter and a 15-yard touchdown by freshman running back Michael Brownlee for his first career score.

Its season now over, Freedom now looks ahead to next year.

"We're going to go to work and get back in the weight room next week and we're going to have a better team next year," McIntyre said.
