Apple, AOL Unite

Monday, March 11, 1996

Apple has formed an alliance with Vienna-based America Online under which Apple will offer AOL software on its machines. The alliance comes after Apple's March 31 decision to discontinue its own on-line service, eWorld.

"America Online has proved to be the most popular on-line service with Macintosh users, so it's natural we would evolve to offer AOL on the desktop," said Steve Franzese, Apple senior director of new media, entertainment and Internet.

Apple said it will bundle AOL software with its Performa computers in North America. In Europe, certain Apple computers will have the software preloaded. The companies confirmed they will provide "easy access and incentive" for former eWorld subscribers to migrate to AOL.
