Description: Loudoun County's Office of Solid Waste Management announces the Household Hazardous Waste collection event schedule for 2008. There will be eight collection events this year. All events are on a Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and are for county residents only.
Typical HHW items are oil-based paints/stains/varnishes, paint thinners, old fuels including gas/oil mixes, kerosene, and diesel fuel; and cleaners such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, bathroom cleaners, and all purpose cleaners. Other HHW items are scouring powders, mothballs, mildew removers, metal polishes, rust removers, wood preservatives, pet care products, furniture polishes and waxes, pool chemicals and most automotive maintenance products.
The first step to identifying HHW is to read the label and watch for the following warning words: Caution, Warning, Danger, Poison, Toxic, Flammable, Combustible, Explosive, Volatile or Corrosive. There may be handling warnings such as "Avoid Contact with Skin or Eyes," "Keep Away from Children" or "Strong Oxidizer."
Remember, used motor oil, used automobile or lead-acid batteries and used antifreeze can be recycled year round for free at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility at 20939 Evergreen Mills Road, Monday through Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They will not be accepted at HHW collection events. Propane tanks also are accepted at the landfill but not at HHW collection events.
Computers and other electronics are not accepted at the HHW events. Loudoun County will host two electronics collection events this year. More information about electronics recycling is available at www.loudoun.gov/electronics .
Also, latex and water-based paints are not a hazardous waste. Dry or solidify leftover paint for disposal with your household garbage. For more tips on proper paint disposal, as well as information about HHW, including the complete 2008 HHW collection event schedule, visit www.loudoun.gov/hhw or call the Office of Solid Waste Management at 703-777-0187.
