Description: The annual Emancipation Day celebration is expanded for the Purcellville Centennial Celebration in 2008. This one-day event interweaves education and celebration, a great event for families and history scholars alike. The day will start with a reenactment of the opening ceremony of the Loudoun County Emancipation Association, including a processional to the historic Emancipation Grounds, period speeches by historic characters, and singing of historic songs and hymns. The celebration continues with family entertainment, children’s games, food, and music. Historic presentations, exhibits, and speeches provide a powerful reminder of the blight of slavery and serve to educate a new generation.
