A: Congress should revise the federal siting process for energy corridors to ensure protection of public lands and property values of landowners, such as legislation I have introduced. Predictions about imminent blackouts have been challenged. Dominion Power has failed to prove that the only solution to meet electricity demands for our region is to build huge transmission lines which will destroy neighborhoods and desecrate large swaths of historically significant land. There are cost-effective options for efficient energy consumption such as innovative pricing, increased conservation and smart technology that must be considered before building massive powerlines.
A: Continuing to find solutions to traffic congestion. For over two decades, I have been involved in every major transportation improvement in our region, including building the original 103-mile Metro system, widening Interstate 66 inside and outside the Beltway, rebuilding the Wilson Bridge. A balanced transportation network is critical, and I have led the effort to bring mass transit through Tysons to Dulles airport, now awaiting final federal approval, and advocating telework to give commuters choices and take cars off roads. The federal government continues as a critical partner, but the state also must provide its share.
A: As a nation governed by the rule of law, we expect those who come here to follow the law. The first priority is to secure our borders. We must do a better job enforcing laws that are already on the books. I have voted for legislation to give local and state law enforcement the authority to assist in the federal law enforcement effort regarding compliance with immigration laws. Law enforcement in my congressional district continues to set the pace for our nation in fighting gangs such as MS-13 and removing criminal illegal immigrants.
A: Based on my record of honest representation, working to build bipartisan coalitions and being more interested in getting results than getting credit.
A: I've worked to ensure the federal gas tax funding formula gives a fair return to donor states like Virginia that contribute more in gas taxes than they get back in highway aid from Washington. The federal highway/transit program is critical to America's economic and national security. Congress must ensure a steady funding stream for transportation projects, including user fees, innovative financing, bonding. Private investment can be in the mix, but ONLY if the public interest is protected, unlike the private ownership of the Dulles Greenway where outrageous toll increases sock commuters and inflate the bottom line of an overseas conglomerate.
