Questions & Answers

Q: By summer 2011, it is predicted, Northern Virginia could be facing blackouts due to its growing demand for energy. Should Congress intervene now to prevent that possibility, and if so, what is the most important single step it could take?

A: Our demand for energy is continuing to grow. Congress must lead the way with a comprehensive approach to our energy crisis that allows for increased domestic production and the development of renewable energy sources while promoting conservation to end our dependence on foreign oil. We also have to increase efficiency for autos, utilities and industry. This means leadership moving forward on reducing carbon emissions not just on our own but by reasserting U.S. leadership on energy and the environment, repairing the damage done by the present administration.

Q: What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

A: We face serious challenges, from energy dependence to health care and the economy to the war in Iraq. But we get bickering out of Washington, not solutions. My opponent has been in Congress for 28 years. He's attentive, but instead of providing the change we need, he has been voting for the Bush agenda that has failed us. I've spent my career as a public policy problem-solver and will bring an understanding of how to tackle the challenges we face to Congress. After 28 years without results, it's time for change. It's time for new leaders with real solutions.

Q: What impact does immigration have on your district?

A: Our immigration system in this country is broken and in need of reform. We welcome legal immigration, but illegal immigration continues to be a problem as the federal government has abdicated its responsibility and left a mess for local and state government. We need a new immigration policy that secures our borders, stops the flow of illegal immigration and penalizes employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Q: Why should voters elect you?

A: I've spent my career solving tough public policy problems. In Congress, I'll use my policy know-how to bring us the change we need.

Q: What steps, if any, should the federal government take to address funding issues for transportation projects?

A: Our district is part of the national capital region and it’s time that the federal government recognizes that it has a responsibility for transportation and infrastructure issues in northern Virginia. When the transportation bill is reauthorized we need to ensure that it is guided by policy that promotes public transportation as well as roads and smart, sustainable growth. Assuring rail to Dulles to assure a world-class airport and economic development of Tysons Corner should be at the top of the list.
