Happy Friday news!
A Dunkin' Donuts crew direct from Boston is right now putting the finishing touches on the soon-to-be-open DD/Baskin Robbins combo in Broadlands, located at the corner of Truro Parish and Chickacoan Trail Drive.
Franchisee Mohamed Hiaoui told me today that he, along with his partners Jimmy Angiollilo and Chuck Angiollilo, are hoping to open the store to customers either tomorrow or Sunday.
After a few weeks of this soft-opening (when businesses work out any kinks), the franchisees will officially kick-off the store's arrival with a more formal grand-opening.
So, it's only been three years since the news broke that a Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins was coming to Ashburn (note the sarcasm). Why the hold up?
Hiaoui would only say that things "had to be worked out with the landlord." No news on what restaurant, if any, is scheduled to fill the empty space next door, he said.
As Hiaoui and I were talking in the store, a future customer poked her head in and asked when they'd be opened.
Kelly Elson, a Bostonian transplant to Broadlands, said she's been waiting anxiously these three years for the Dunkin' Donuts to finally open.
"We miss the Dunkin's in Boston," she said. "They're on every corner there - and dare I say, much more popular than Starbucks."

It's hard to celebrate the opening of a business that pedals 'food' that chokes arteries and spikes blood sugar. Cardiac disease and type-2 diabetes are serious health problems in the US, so I fail to see how this is positive 'news'.

Erica-
You're a year off. The DD was first confirmed in March of 2004.

Wow, skyemoor - lighten up a bit! Is life so un-fun that a person cannot partake of an occasional treat? I think the answer is "Moderation in All Things" ----

skyemoor: Are you pro-choice? Then let me choose donuts and I'll let you choose rice cakes and tofu. Okay?

the place was packed this morning- and they did a fantastic job of keeping up with the mob- um- CROWD. i was impressed- everyone was smiling and patient and enjoying the gorgeous morning. lots of bikes, lots of walkers, lots of families- a very positive morning for the Broadlands. i hope the naysayers and whiners stay quiet and let this place have a minute to enjoy a successful grand opening! service won't ever be perfect but it IS giving 110%!

tttrenee - great comment! I told my kids that the Dunkin Donuts finally opened in Broadlands and they had a look of disbelief! I will have to take them over next trip to Ashburn.

Finally. I am sick of driving into that awful shopping center in Leesburg or worse into Sterling. Now we just need a couple more to lessen the rush hour crowds a bit to something more tolerable. I enjoy still having Wegmans and DD since I moved here from NY, but the crowds almost make it unbearable to actually go.

Burt, your rant belongs on craigs list. You have a femine side which shows in your writings. If you don't like Leesburg or Sterling stay out. Good Day,ph

I have to agree w Burt. The DD / Starbucks strip mall on Market Street / Route 7 bites big time. The ingress / egress is horrible and the center itself is worse than ugly. And to add icing, some other genius decided to install these PITA speed bumps which, no matter how slowly you drive over them, the front of your car smacks the other side. Nonetheless DD makes THE BEST donuts!!

You should change your name, its quite inaccurate. I actually live in Leesburg. My complaint is about the design of that shopping center. There are a lot of narrow lanes and getting out of there at either exit is a nightmare depending on the time of day. The Broadlands location is also along my commute, so I like it for that. The Sterling DD is just far away, not necessarily objectionable. The rest of Sterling however is pretty undesirable.

I tried to go there last night for a donut and it was mobbed, guess I will have to wait for the euphoria everyone is feeling to go away!

considering waiting next time- the chance at a fresh hot donut righ tout of the kitchen is better when they are flying off the shelves! :) Finding Food at its Best--- it's a science with me... lol
that said- I don't even EAT donuts. that's a door that must remain closed or i will outgrow my stretch pants.
