D.C. United in Loudoun?

Rumors that the D.C. United soccer club is scouting a stadium in Loudoun are once again making the rounds. (Props to Dave Scarangella of the Dulles District blog for this tip.)

The soccer club has done all it can to stay in the city - fans even staged a protest march May 9 to support a D.C stadium. But as hopes of a dedicated soccer stadium in our nation's capital dim, fans now just want to keep the franchise in the regional metro area.

Doug Hicks, spokesman for D.C. United, told me Wednesday evening that it was too early to comment, but he did confirm that the club was in contact with several different local municipalities about a stadium. He wouldn't confirm if Loudoun was one of them.

A phone call placed yesterday to Loudoun's Department of Economic Development director Larry Rosenstrauch was not returned. (For the record, the department typically doesn't comment on such deals before they're officially announced.)

WTOP reported yesterday that one of D.C. United's primary owners, Victor McFarlane, plans to sell his stake in the team to partner Will Chang. Chang said he is committed to finding a new stadium for the team and fans.

"We have many challenges ahead for both the team and a stadium site, but I am confident we will emerge successful on both fronts, including bringing the club to a stronger international level," he said.

What do you think about D.C. United possibly moving to Loudoun? Where in LoCo do you think a stadium would best be located? (Also, check out the Ashburn stadium comments which started earlier this week at Steven Goff's Soccer Insider blog.)

I'm sure Lori Waters will take immediate credit for it, if this were to happen...

I would love it. Maybe along the Greenway. Here is my plan - increased usage of the road will enable the owners to drop the fee. If not, somewhere with no immediate neighbors do to noise, lights, people, belching cars, and what not, where there is room to widen the roads to accomodate traffic.

It would be wonderful to be able to take my kids to pro sports without going to DC or Maryland. And they are soccer players, so it would be great!

Is Kincora still on, at the intersection of 28 and 7? If not, how about dropping a stadium there?

Isn't Kinkora already trying to build a minor league baseball stadium at their site?

I think a Major League Soccer team would be a better draw than a minor league baseball team. And MLS stadiums aren't that big. The Home Depot Center, where the L.A. Galaxy play, only holds 27,000.

Ill take the DC United over a lame minor league baseball team anyday. The minor league team wouldnt even be affiliated with MLB.

Loudoun united for MLS!!!!!!

it should absolutely be built in The District where it can be close to public transportation, existing infrastructure, and the geographic center of their fan base. All Loudoun needs is more s**t to be built and more traffic out in the middle of medium-density nowhere.

There's no question Kinkora is the logical place - minor league baseball isnt nearly as attractive an opportunity. Get it done, Loudoun.

grl7: Typical "cityiot" hatin' on the burbs. If DC wants their team so much, how about building them a stadium?

Should be in the city. Maybe if Metro was in Loudoun in the next 20 years but still holding my breath. BUT if its not my money (not taxpayer) then Loudoun One or Kincora

The stadium should be built close to public transportation.
