Details about the "Lansdowne murder investigation are scant at this time, as investigators continue to scour the area around Riverside Parkway and Rocky Creek Drive for clues.

People who had gathered near the blocked-off area at noon when I arrived said they were shaken by the news that a murder had occurred in their neighborhood.

“There’s a hiking path down there,” said one onlooker who didn't want to give his name, as he pointed to the bridge not far from where the body was discovered this morning. “We’ll think twice before we go walking there again.”

As reported, a neighbor contacted the Sheriff’s Department about 5 a.m. this morning after she heard a woman’s screams and saw a suspicious white van parked along Riverside Parkway. Sheriff’s deputies who arrived on the scene could not locate the van, but did discover a deceased white male between the ages of 55 and 75 lying in the grassy area near the intersection of Riverside Parkway and Rocky Creek Drive.

Kraig Troxell, LCSO spokesman said, the deceased man was wearing black and gray jogging attire, a tan shirt underneath his outfit and a green stocking cap.

After searching the scene, deputies found blood on the white fence across the street and soon found a severely injured white or Hispanic woman, possibly 40 to 50 years old, in the nearby woods. The woman was found conscious, but not coherent. Medevacs transported her to Inova Fairfax Hospital. There are no clothing descriptions for the woman, but Troxell said he believes that she, too, may have been wearing a stocking cap.

Neither victim was carrying identification, Troxell said, nor is it known what caused the woman’s injuries or the man’s death.
