Loudoun Primary Turnout Could Be Low

Erica Garman at 3:32 p.m., June 8, 2009 (8 comments)

Voter interest in an election can most often be measured by the number of absentee ballots requested. And Loudouners - like others in Virginia - appear to be disengaged in tomorrow's primary to pick the Democratic contender for governor.

Loudoun County's General Registrar Judy Brown told me this morning that in Loudoun only 283 absentee ballots have been requested or sent out for this race. (Compare that to the approximately 20,000 absentee ballots Loudouners cast in the Obama/McCain election!)

Of those 283 ballots, 127 were used by people who came into the registrar's office in person to vote. Another 111 were automatically e-mailed to voters working abroad in the military or government. So far, Brown said she has only received back six of those 111 sent abroad. Another 45 ballots were mailed out to people who requested them; 40 of those have come back into the office.

And here's something interesting. Since November, Brown said, the county has added eight new polling places: five in the Dulles district, two in the Blue Ridge district and one in Broad Run. Residents affected by this change were sent new voters registration cards. (To avoid any confusion tomorrow, you may want to check your voter registration status/polling place now by clicking here.)

Polls open tomorrow at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Any registered voter can cast a ballot tomorrow, even if you're a diehard Republican. (For more coverage of the governor's race, see the Washington Post's Race to Richmond section.)

In fact, Joe Budzinski of Sterling, the conservative blogger at NoVa Town Hall, is encouraging readers to vote for state senator Creigh Deeds in tomorrow's election. He writes:

"Deeds is, by far, the least liberal of the candidates on the ballot this Tuesday. While I do not intend to vote for Deeds in November, I will vote for him Tuesday, and I encourage everyone else to do so also."

I'm not sure if this conservative call-to-action will tip the results tomorrow or not, but I am predicting a Deeds win. The Washington Post's endorsement of Deeds really gave his campaign a much-needed shot-in-the-arm.

Although former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe has the money to go head-to-head with Republican Bob McDonnell this fall - VPAP notes he's raised more campaign dollars than Deeds and former house delegate Brian Moran combined - I'm not sure that Virginians completely trust his national political background. Moran, on the other hand, has the name recognition and Richmond experience, but he may skew a little too left for "Real Virginia."

In Loudoun, however, I'm predicting that voters will side with Moran. He's got the Northern Virginia name recognition and the endorsement of many Loudoun elected officials, including delegates David Poisson (D-32) and Chuck Caputo (D-67), supervisors Susan Buckley (D-Sugarland Run), Stevens Miller (D-Dulles) and Kelly Burk (D-Leesburg), and Leesburg's Mayor Kristen Umstattd.

It's going to be a close race.

I'm tired of getting calls from "Friends of Terry McAuliffe"! Thanks for the link to the Voter Registration status page - that is a very helpful site.

Great link to the state site. Though it is a shame the voting registration info. page doesn't have details, like how long the polls are open...

Are you dyslexic, Funnyguyva? You STILL cannot correctly type out Barack Obama's initials!

Oh, they're all VERY serious when they discuss their messiah. Let's see if that still holds truth in three years. I predict not. 6 months of a recession is one thing. Four years of one is quite another matter. Wait till the inflation arrives...
That's what happens when rank amateurs play with markets.
