Banding Together in the Midst of Tragedy

Erica Garman at 2:23 p.m., June 5, 2009

I'm amazed how this community rallies around good causes. Here are two that you and/or your family may want to check out tomorrow:

Ride to Benefit Organ Donation

Paul Rossmeissl, 54, of Herndon died June 7, 2006 from a fatal bicycle accident on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, a route he frequently traveled. The tragedy resulted in the gift of life to three individuals who received his liver and two kidneys.

To honor his memory, Rossmeissl's family has organized a bike ride on Saturday to benefit organ donation in the D.C. metro area.

"Paul's Ride for Life" will begin tomorrow from 7 a.m. to noon at the W&OD Trail at Trailside Park in Ashburn. Cyclists have the option of riding from the starting point to Purcellville and back - a 32-mile route; or, choose a 9-mile trek to Rt. 28 and back.

Online registration for the event has closed, but riders may register in person for $30 at the Ashburn event.

In the United States, there are currently more than 100,000 people waiting for an organ transplant to save their lives.

Fundraisers to Help Lovettesville Boy

The Lovettsville community is rallying around the family of Marshall Wood, a fifth-grade student at Lovettsville Elementary School who was involved in a dirt bike accident May 20. Marshall sustained severe head trauma and internal injuries in the incident. He's home now after a week in ICU, but he and his parents face a lengthy - and costly - recovery.

To help the Wood family with their mounting medical bills and lost income, community members have planned a number of fundraising events and have even launched a dedicated Web site to update folks on Marshall's rehabilitation.

Tomorrow morning, a $5 pancake breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Lovettsville Fire and Rescue station to benefit the Marshall Wood Fund. Future events include a family spaghetti dinner fundraiser and a car wash organized by Marshall's fellow fifth graders.
