Community Helps Family Displaced by Fire

On the morning of May 10 -- Mother's Day -- a fire ravaged the Sack family home located in the Farmwell Hunt community of Ashburn. Luckily, Wendy Campese-Sack and her husband Patrick Sack safely evacuated their four sons aged 10 to 17, three of their son's friends and themselves from the burning house.

The three-alarm blaze, which brought fire-rescue units from Arcola, Ashburn, Leesburg, Moorefield and Sterling, caused an estimated $800,000 damage to the Sack residence and surrounding homes. Wendy said investigators believe the fire was started when a barbecue light blew over and ignited a propane tank on the back patio.

"I smelled smoke when I woke up that morning," she said, "But I figured the kids had just been microwaving popcorn or something."

As the family tries to recover from the emotional turmoil of this tragedy (along with their home and possessions, they lost their 2-year old dog in the fire), they've been overwhelmed with the support of local agencies, friends and even neighbors they said they've never met.

"I didn't know how much we were loved," Wendy said in a phone conversation today. "The help from the Red Cross, churches, the school community, Little League and friends has been overwhelming."

Friends and neighbors, Wendy continued, are also organizing bake sales, restaurant fundraisers and even a 5K run to help the Sacks get back on their feet.

"I haven't asked for a thing," she added.

The Sack's plan to rebuild their home at the same location. Until then, the family is staying in a local hotel for a few weeks - paid for by their insurance company - until they move into a rental home in July.
