Erica Garman is on vacation this week, but we will update the blog in her absence with posts from our correspondents and staff.
American Community Newspapers, the parent company of Leesburg Today, Loudoun Magazine, Loudoun Business, Middleburg Life, other Northern Virginia publications and several newspapers in the Midwest, has filed for bankruptcy.
Leesburg Today's Web site posted this press release in which it was stated that, "There will be no change in the Company's day to day operating activity and its newspapers will continue to serve their local communities, readers and advertisers without interruption."
The paper also posted a letter to its readers, signed by Publisher Norman K. Styer that tried to reassure readers: "You will continue to receive your paper and our Website will stay up and running as we strive to provide our readers with the local news and information important to the community," Styer wrote.
This news comes on the heels of last week's announcement from the Blue Ridge Leader that the paper had published its final edition.
According to Editor & Publisher, the trade publication of the newspaper industry, ACN is the seventh newspaper publisher to file for bankruptcy since December of last year.

They could save some $ by not delivering to my house. I never ordered this paper. I have never paid for it either (which leads me to believe it is tax-subsidized). I never read it - it goes straight from my mail box to my recycling container. A complete waste of a tree!!

It's not tax subsidized, it's advertising subsidized. It's a ten to one ad to content ratio, just page of ads after ads.

Leesburg Today is a quality product, and I hope the parent company can pull through. I love the Washington Post, but aside from the (excellent) investigation they did on the Board of Supervisors and developers a couple years ago, most of its reporting out in Loudoun barely scratches the surface beyond basic rewrites of the press releases from the Sheriff.

Leesburg Today used to be colorful and intensely local but in recent years it seems to be comfortable writing "process" stories about local government -- really dull and doesn't capture the interest of the new residents in the upscale communities -- while overlooking the colorful characters in the community. And no pictures! It desperately needs to recover the vitality that used to make it such a contrast to the Post. Loudoun Easterner is eating their lunch.

Any move that puts one fewer paper in my driveway while I'm on vacation is a good thing. Good riddance.

The paper doesn't go on your driveway. The company pays a lot of money to the USPS to avoid the ditch delivery.
